Untitled
By Michael Graves (b.1934)
Located in New York, NY
Michael Graves (July 9, 1934 – March 12, 2015) was an American architect. Identified as one of The New York Five, as well as Memphis Group, Graves was known first for his contemporary building designs and some prominent public commissions that became iconic examples of Postmodern architecture, such as the Portland Building and Denver Public Library. His recognition grew through designing domestic products sold by premium Italian housewares maker Alessi, and later low-cost new designs at stores such as Target and J. C. Penney in the United States. He was a representative of New Urbanism and New Classical Architecture and formerly designed postmodern buildings, and was recognized as a major influence in all three movements. Michael Graves was one of the most prominent and influential architects and designers of the late- 20th and early- 21st centuries. In his buildings and in his furniture and housewares, Graves embodied the essence of Postmodernism — a refined classicism inflected with a humanistic sense of joy. The Indiana-born Graves attended the University of Cincinnati’s architectural program and continued his studies at Harvard as well as at the American Academy in Rome. In 1962, he began teaching at Princeton, and remained there throughout his career. Following a seminal 1972 Museum of Modern Art group survey of rising modernist architects, Graves, along with Richard Meier, Charles Gwathmey, Peter Eisenman...

Venus
By James Abbott McNeill Whistler
Located in New York, NY
James Whistler (1834-1903), Venus, 1859. Etching and drypoint, printed in black ink on laid paper, an impression in the second (final) state: there was no published edition. 6 x 9 inches (15 x 22.6 cm) sheet 73/8 x 117/8 inches (18.8 x 30.3 cm) Reference: Kennedy 59; Glasgow 60 A very fine impression. A study of Héloïse, ‘Fumette’, asleep in bed, her head pressed into the pillow and the bedclothes covering her lower legs. This is one of three portraits Whistler made of Fumette in 1859: one of the others shows her standing and in the third only her head and shoulders are depicted. Venus is a work in the Realist tradition, and may be compared with Courbet’s nudes of the same period. The artist may also have had in mind Rembrandt’s study of Antiope in his etching Jupiter and Antiope. Venus was never published and there is no record of it being shown until 1898 when it was included in an Exhibition of Etchings, Drypoints and Lithographs by Whistler at H. Wunderlich & Co., New York. To have been overlooked for exhibition until so late in Whistler’s life might suggest that the subject was considered improper. Streetcar Situation Green A/P 1/1 -figurative, playful, pop-art, limited edition
By Charles Pachter
Located in Bloomfield, ON
This artist’s proof (1/1) is a playful homage to the beloved image of a Toronto streetcar. Pop Artist Charlie Pachter was inspired to create a series of prints on streetcars for one of his first exhibitions in the seventies. This serigraph features the detailed outline of a streetcar angled across three panels—the back and front of a streetcar painted green appears on either side—top and bottom. The backdrop is neutral, bordered in gold. Pachter is a much-admired Canadian artistic polymath, his colourful pop artwork merging playful even irreverent elements with deeply iconic imagery. “….a good art critic would compare it with Warhol’s soup cans...

A fine impression printed on cream wove paper with full margins. Toning in the image, otherwise good condition. Signed in pencil. Housed in a 22 x 28-inch archival mat, suitable for framing. Born in 1818, Sir Francis Seymour Haden was an etcher, collector and surgeon. He studied at the Derby School, Christ’s Hospital and University College in London. He also studied at the medical schools of the Sorbonne in Paris and at Grenoble. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1842 and he was made a fellow in 1857. Haden was a vice-president of the obstetrical society of London and one of the founders of the Royal Hospital for Incurables in 1850. He was the first President of the Royal Society of Painter-Echers. In 1858, Haden encouraged James McNeil Whistler to work from nature and consequently, Whistler dedicated his first set of etchings entitled “French Set”, to Haden. The etchings were printed by Auguste Delâtre in Paris and marketed, with some help from Haden, in London. In 1859 Whistler settled in London and often visited Haden’s Sloane Street home. Whistler executed a number of paintings and etchings of domestic scenes within Haden’s home, among them “Reading By Lamplight...
