From My Brooklyn Closet to Yours: 3 New Yorker Approved Winter Outfits to Shop Now
Welcome to Word on the Street, a quarterly series in which one editor takes to the streets of New York City to snap her favorite fashion moments and shop them out just for you.
I created Word on the Street at the beginning of the year as a love letter to New York City—the place I call home and my favorite fashion city in the world. Every time I leave my apartment, I am amazed, inspired, and sometimes perplexed by my neighbors' personal style—but that's what makes New Yorkers one of a kind. For this last installment of the year, it's only fitting that I step out from behind the camera and close out 2025 with three of my favorite winter looks from Nordstrom. When I first moved to the city from Los Angeles, I didn't know the first thing about winter dressing. I quickly abandoned my personal style in the name of warmth, but after seven winters, I've finally got it down. Here's the secret: Don't be afraid of statement outerwear, incorporate on-trend accessories, and experiment with different color combinations. Below you can shop my ensembles from Nordstrom—I've curated just the pieces you need to dress for winter in style.
What's your #1 styling tip for dressing up while staying warm?
NGH: The answer is always statement outerwear. On days when the weather allows me to set aside my puffers and raincoats, I reach for a printed coat or faux-fur jacket. This one from Avec Les Filles happens to be both. I keep my base outfit simple—black turtleneck, staple jeans, and black boots—and add stylish elements through the coat and accessories. There's something about leather gloves that feels very old-money Upper East Side, which is a fun cosplay for me as a Brooklynite. I should note these are also tech gloves, so you can use your phone while keeping your hands warm—a genius invention. My exact jacket is almost sold out, so I've included another style I'm loving this season.
What is a styling note you've taken from your New York neighbors during winter?
NGH: Embrace the winter classics. A black puffer jacket, a pair of Ugg boots, and a beanie will never fail you. While this outfit gets repeated year after year, I gave it my best 2025 spin by incorporating this year's trends. Instead of a neutral-colored beanie, I tried a cherry-red one. This exact outfit is a New Yorker's bread and butter come winter, and Nordstrom has all the elements you need to re-create it.
What are some winter color combinations you recommend testing out this season?
NGH: I have no problem playing it safe in the color department. Sticking to more muted tones like blue and brown is true to my personal style, and this outfit is a perfect example of that. Thankfully, the New York fashion set is in agreement this season. More and more, I'm spotting color combinations like navy blue, chocolate, and teddy brown in both apparel and accessories.
