Pablo Picasso, The Little Bullfight, from XXe siecle, 1970
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled La Petite Corrida (The Little Bullfight), from the album Special issue of the XX Siecle Review, Hommage a Picasso, originates from the 1971 edition published by Tudor Publishing Co., New York, in collaboration with Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris. La Petite Corrida reflects Picasso’s lifelong fascination with the bullfight—a subject that symbolized vitality, struggle, and creation throughout his career. Executed with the spontaneity and graphic brilliance characteristic of his late lithographs, the composition captures both movement and ritual, merging ancient spectacle with modern energy. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 × 9.75 inches (31.75 × 24.77 cm). Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris, the atelier that produced many of Picasso’s greatest lithographic works. Artwork Details: Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) Title: La Petite Corrida (The Little Bullfight), from the album Hommage a Picasso, 1971 Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 12.5 × 9.75 inches (31.75 × 24.77 cm) Inscription: Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued Date: 1971 Publisher: Tudor Publishing Co., New York, in collaboration with Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Catalogue raisonne references: Catalogue de L’oeuvre Grave et Lithographie, Pablo Picasso: Catalogue of the Printed Graphic Work. Picasso, Pablo, and Fernand Mourlot. Picasso Lithographs, Translated by Jean Didry, Boston Book and Art Publisher, 1970, illustration 302. Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album Hommage a Picasso, published 1971 by Tudor Publishing Co. and Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris About the Publication: Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s XXe Siecle (Twentieth Century) was one of the most influential art journals of the modern era, founded in Paris in 1938 as a platform for the greatest painters, sculptors, and writers of the 20th century. San Lazzaro—a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism—believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, including Mourlot, Arte, and Bellini, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design—an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision revolutionized modern art and defined the visual language of the 20th century. A child prodigy from Malaga, Spain, Picasso’s career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed an astonishing range of styles and innovations—from the melancholic Blue and romantic Rose periods to his pioneering invention of Cubism with Georges Braque, which shattered conventional notions of perspective and form. Influenced by the bold expressiveness of El Greco, the structure of Cezanne, and the vitality of African and Iberian sculpture, Picasso became a central figure of the Paris avant-garde, working in creative dialogue with contemporaries such as Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His insatiable experimentation extended across painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, forever expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. A master of reinvention, Picasso profoundly shaped generations of artists who followed—from Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jeff Koons and Banksy—cementing his status as a timeless cultural icon whose works remain among the most sought after worldwide. His landmark painting Les Femmes d’Alger (Version “O”) achieved a record-breaking sale of $179,365,000 at Christie’s, New York, on May 11, 2015, affirming Picasso’s enduring legacy as one of the most influential and valuable artists in history. Provence Lavender Fields with Farmhouse and Distant Hills French Landscape
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Title: Provence Lavender Fields with Farmhouse and Distant Hills French Landscape Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size (H x W): 8.5 x 6.5 inches Condition: Good overall, with light natural edge wear consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This luminous watercolor and gouache landscape by Pierre Neveu captures the quintessential beauty of Provence, featuring sweeping lavender fields, warm ochre farm buildings, and rolling blue-green hills under a glowing southern sky. Neveu’s ability to express the colours, textures, and atmosphere of the French countryside is fully evident here, making this an ideal work for collectors seeking an evocative Post-Impressionist interpretation of Provence’s most iconic landscape. The foreground is dominated by the rich purple rows of blooming lavender, painted with loose, rhythmic brushstrokes that convey both movement and scent—those unmistakable fields that draw visitors from around the world each summer. A sunlit farmhouse complex sits beyond the lavender, its tiled roofs and stone walls glowing in warm yellows, browns, and soft creams. The mid-ground transitions into layered greens of vineyards, orchards, and cypresses, characteristic of the Luberon and Vaucluse regions. Above, the composition rises into deep blue and indigo mountain ranges, their tonal shifts suggesting atmospheric heat and great distance. Neveu’s use of gouache adds solidity to architectural details while maintaining the translucency and fluidity of watercolor in the sky and foliage. His sketchlike graphite lines remain visible beneath the paint, giving the work an immediacy reminiscent of plein-air studies done on location in rural Provence. Perfect for collectors of French landscapes, lavender field paintings...

Shop Art on 1stDibs: Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.
