Zvi Yehuda Aldouby (1904 - 1996) was active/lived in Israel. Zvi Aldouby is known for Artist, teaching. Upon aliyah in 1924 he worked in agriculture and construction. 1936-51 studied art and the history of art with Trude Haim, Professor J. Schwartzman, Ds. Schiff, Pinkerfeld, Aviyona, Javetz, and others. After WWII he worked for the Jewish Agency as an envoy in Italy under the aegis of the UNWRA, on the welfare of the survivors of the Holocaust in the DP Camps. In 1948 in Paris, he evaluated advanced studies in European Art Centers. He was a member of the Israel Painters and Sculptors Association. He was a member of the Artists' Village in Ein Harod from its inception. EIN HAROD About the Museum's Holdings: Israeli art is represented by the works of Reuven Rubin, Zaritzky, Nahum Gutman, Mordecai Ardon, Aharon Kahana, Arie Lubin, Yehiel Shemi, Yosl Bergner and others. The graphic arts collection contains drawings and graphic works by Camille Pissarro, Modigliani, Jules Pascin, Marc Chagall (almost all of his graphic work), and numerous other artists. The sculpture collection includes works by Jewish sculptors from all over the world including leading Israeli sculptors; Ben Zvi, Lishansky, David Palombo (brutalist), Yehiel Shemi, Aharon Bezalel and Igael Tumarkin (surrealist). Many Jewish sculptors from all parts of the world, beginning with Mark Antokolsky, are represented in the collection. In the sculpture courtyard there are works by Chana Orloff, Jacob Epstein (the works he bequeathed to the Museum), Enrico Glicenstein, Loutchansky, Constant and Indenbaum from Western Europe; Glid from Yugoslavia; William Zorach, Chaim Gross and Minna Harkavy from the United States; and most of the outstanding sculptors of Israel : Zev Ben-Zvi, Lishansky, Ziffer, Rudi Lehmann, Dov Feigin, Moshe Sternschuss, Zvi Aldouby, Yehiel Shemi, Aharon Bezalel, Hava Mehutan, Igael Tumarkin. The gallery was considered a vanguard space in Chicago for exhibiting emerging abstract artists from the surrounding area. Claude Venard (French, 1913 - 1999) Venice Canal, Italy, circa 1950-55 Oil on canvas 24 x 24 inches Signed lower center Provenance: Private Collection, Massachusetts The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Galerie Felix Vercel. Claude Venard was a notable exponent of the French mid-century post-Cubist movement. He was born to bourgeois parents from Burgogne in Paris, on March 21, 1913. At the age of 17, he enrolled and attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, but remained for only two days, not adhering to the school's academic style. Instead, he spent the following six years at the École des Arts Appliqués, taking evening classes and embracing the contemporary Parisian art scene, all the while becoming recognized in its circles. Not able to support himself as an artist, by 1936 he found employment as a restorer at the Louvre, further honing his artistic skills. Paris of the period was dominated by an art trend that strongly favored abstraction. Following a group show at the Galerie Billet-Worms in 1935, art critic Waldemar George declared: "Let's be young again! Painting is not dead… Its course has not stopped. Forces Nouvelles is born." Venard contributed and initially adhered to the strict disciplines of the Forces Nouvelle group. But as with many of his fellow members, he soon abandoned it seeking individual expression. ABOUT THE ARTIST Robert Philipp (1895–1981) was a celebrated American Post-Impressionist painter known for his nudes, still lifes, and portraits. Noted art critic Henry McBride named Philipp one of America's top six painters of his generation. Philipp was an instructor of painting at the Art Students League, New York, for 33 years. Philipp was Secretary of the National Academy of Design, a National Academician, and a Benjamin Franklin Fellow at the Royal Society of Arts in London. His composition and painting style has been compared to the art of Edgar Degas and Pierre Auguste Renoir. In 1940, Philipp was invited to Los Angeles by Hollywood producer Louis B. Mayer to paint portraits of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie stars.
