He worked in various industries, including as a coal miner, gold miner, and machinist at Schneebeck's Industries in Colorado Springs for 20 years. During this time, Carter honed his artistic skills under the mentorship of Charles Bunnell, a painter from the Broadmoor Academy.
Carter’s works reflect the boldness and emotional intensity of Abstract Expressionism, with vivid colors and strong compositions. He worked primarily out of Colorado Springs and Canon City, Colorado, and exhibited his art nationally, including shows in Texas and Illinois. Calvert Coggeshall worked as an abstract painter and interior designer primarily in Maine and New York City. From 1951 to 1978, he exhibited regularly with the Betty Parsons Gallery, and later with its successor, the Jack Tilton Gallery.
Born in Whitesboro, New York, Coggeshall started his career as an interior designer, working on commissions for clients in the New York City area. He later consulted on the interior designs for Henry Dreyfuss' line of cruise/cargo ships called American Export, popular from the 1940s through the 1960s. The Post described, “One night Art Editor Stuart was having a party. His three boys came downstairs four times and were conducted back up by their mother. The next time they came down, Papa Stuart waxed excited, firmly conveyed them aloft himself, and they did not show up again. Stuart was warmly congratulated on his success as a father. When the party broke up, the youngest lad was found asleep on the stairs. Stuart claims that the older ones never did come down again, but this was probably because they merely went to sleep in their beds from natural causes. George Hugehes has painted some other people’s offspring, to get over the idea that children all over America are eager to improve their minds by listening to sophisticated conversation.”

Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) Paseo A.R. 416 and Arrastro A.R. 423 are numbered from the edition of 50 on the reverse and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Undoubtedly the theatrical drama and flashy machismo of the matadors appealed greatly to Picasso's sensibilities and resonated with his Spanish roots. In 1959, Picasso produced an 8-piece plate series, each featuring a different bullfighting scene suggested through lively stipple lines. Paseo A.R. 416 depicts a line of bullfighters highlighted by a streak of yellow. The strokes of blue above and below the figures contrast with the warm of the yellow, creating visual tension that anticipates the drama of the fight. Arrastro, from Service Scènes de Corrida, 1959 A.R. 423 features a victorious bullfighter holding his curved sword, known as an estqoue, over his head. The dark atmosphere created by the deep blue, black, and touch of brown is slashed by the intense yellow down the center of the plate. This shock of bright color evokes the excitement of the bullfighter as he stands triumphant over the bull.
