The Jolly Flat Boat Men
By George Caleb Bingham
Located in Missouri, MO
The Jolly Flat Boat Men, 1847 After George Caleb Bingham (American, 1811-1879) Engraved by Thomas Doney (French, active New York 1844-1849) Engraving with Hand-Coloring Published by The American Art-Union, New York (1838-1851) Printed by Powell and Co. 18 x 24 inches 32 x 38 inches with frame In 1847, the American Art-Union purchased Bingham’s painting "The Jolly Flat Boat Men" (1846; National Gallery of Art) directly from the artist. The subscription-based organization, founded in 1838 as the Apollo Association, boasted nearly ten-thousand members at this date. For an annual fee of five dollars, each received a large reproductive engraving and was entered in a lottery to win original artworks exhibited at the Art-Union’s Free Gallery. Aimed at educating the public about contemporary American art, the organization developed an impressive distribution network that reached members in every state. The broad circulation of the Art-Union's print helped to establish Bingham's reputation and made his river scene famous. Born in Augusta County, Virginia in the Shenandoah River Valley, George Caleb Bingham became known for classically rendered western genre, especially Missouri and Mississippi River scenes of boatmen bringing cargo to the American West and politicians seeking to influence frontier life. One of his most famous river genre paintings was The Jolly Flatboatmen completed in several versions in 1846. This first version of this painting is in the Manoogian Collection at the National Gallery of Art. Fame resulted for this work when it was exhibited in New York at the American Art Union whose organizers made an engraving of 10,000 copies and distributed it to all of their members. Paintings such as Country Politician (1849) and County Election (1852) and Stump Speaking (1854) reflected Bingham's political interests. In 1819, as an eight-year old, he moved to Boon's Lick, Missouri with his parents and grandfather who had been farmers and inn keepers in the Shenandoah Valley near Rockingham, Virginia. Reportedly as a child there, he took every opportunity to escape supervision to travel the River and watch the marine activity. His father died in 1827, when his son was sixteen years old. His mother had encouraged his art talent, but art lessons were not easily obtainable. In order to earn money, he apprenticed to a cabinet maker but determined to become an artist. By 1835, he had a modest reputation as a frontier painter and successfully charged twenty dollars per portrait in St. Louis. "His portraits had become standard decorations in prosperous Missouri homes." (Samuels 46). In 1836, he moved to Natchez, Mississippi and there had the same kind of career, only was able to charge forty dollars per portrait. He remained largely self taught until 1837, when he, age 26 and using the proceeds from his portraiture, studied several months at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He later said that he learned much of his atmospheric style and classically balanced composition by copying paintings in collections in St. Louis and Philadelphia and that among his most admired painters were Thomas Cole, John Vanderlyn, and William Sidney Mount. Between 1856 and 1859, Bingham traveled back and forth to Dusseldorf, Germany, where he studied the work of genre painters. Some critics think these influences were negative on his work because during that time period, he abandoned his luminist style that had brought him so much public affirmation. Bingham credited Chester Harding (1792-1866) as being the earliest and one of the most lasting influences on his work. Harding,a leading portraitists when Bingham was a young man, had a studio in Franklin, near Bingham's home town. In 1822, when Bingham was ten years old, he watched Harding finish a portrait of Daniel Boone. Bingham recalled that watching Harding with the Boone portrait was a lasting inspiration and that it was the first time he had ever seen a painting in progress. Harding suggested to Bingham that he begin doing portraiture by finding subjects in the river men, which, of course, opened the subject matter that established fame and financial success for Bingham. Harding also encouraged Bingham to copy with paint engravings. He later painted two portraits of Boone but, contrary to the assertions of some scholars, he did not do Boone portraits in the company of Harding. Bingham's portraits of Boone are not located, but one of them, a wood signboard for a hotel in Boonville circa 1828 to 1830, showed a likeness of Boone in buckskin dress...

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Maternity, 1951 (after)

It has been completed to print, March 25, 1951 on the presses of Mourlot Freres and Georges Duval, maitre imprimeur, in Paris. The typography is from L'Imprimerie Union. About the Publication: Les Lithographies de Renoir (The Lithographs of Renoir), published in Monte-Carlo in 1951 under the direction of Andre Sauret in collaboration with Fernand Mourlot, stands among the most elegant postwar tributes to Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s artistic legacy. Conceived as part of the distinguished series of fine art albums issued by Editions du livre, the publication united leading masters of lithography to honor Renoir’s enduring influence on modern art. Printed on grand velin Renage filigrane a la marque de l'editeur by the ateliers of Mourlot Freres and Georges Duval, the album combined technical precision with scholarly presentation, showcasing interpretive plates rendered with exceptional fidelity and tonal refinement. It embodies the collaborative spirit between printer, publisher, and artist that characterized the golden age of French art editions, joining other monumental projects such as those devoted to Matisse, Chagall, Braque, and Picasso. A hallmark of twentieth-century art publishing, Les Lithographies de Renoir preserves the warmth and radiance of Renoir’s aesthetic through the masterful lithographic techniques that made Mourlot Freres synonymous with excellence in fine art printing. About the Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) was one of the most influential and beloved artists in the history of modern art, a French Impressionist master whose radiant color harmonies, sensual brushwork, and joyful depictions of life helped transform the course of painting. Born in Limoges, France, into a modest family, Renoir began his career as a porcelain painter before studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and joining the avant-garde circle of Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Frederic Bazille. Together they pioneered plein-air painting, capturing fleeting light and atmosphere with revolutionary immediacy. Renoir’s early works, such as La Loge (1874) and Bal du moulin de la Galette (1876), embody the luminous vitality of Impressionism, while his later period, influenced by the classical mastery of Raphael, Ingres, and Rubens, brought greater structure and sensuality to his figures. His art evolved into a vision of timeless beauty expressed through color, form, and emotion, celebrating humanity and intimacy with unmatched tenderness. Even when afflicted by severe rheumatoid arthritis, Renoir continued to paint daily, his hands bound with cloth, and collaborated with sculptor Richard Guino to translate his soft, fluid touch into bronze. His influence radiated across generations—Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray all drew inspiration from his dedication to expressive color and emotional depth. His sensual palette profoundly impacted Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Raoul Dufy, and Andre Derain, while later artists such as Marc Chagall and Balthus inherited his lyrical humanism and poetic approach to beauty. Renoir’s art, often described as a hymn to joy, found universality in its warmth, intimacy, and reverence for life’s everyday grace. Today, his works hang in major museums worldwide, including the Musee d’Orsay, the Louvre, the National Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, continuing to inspire collectors and artists alike. The highest auction record for Pierre-Auguste Renoir was achieved with Bal du moulin de la Galette (1876), which sold for $78.1 million USD at Sotheby’s, New York, on May 17, 1990, securing his enduring legacy as one of the greatest masters of Impressionism and one of the most cherished figures in art history. As modern it is necessary to point out, among the Germans »Greiner, Klinger, Leibl, Liebermann, Menzel, Stauffer-Bern; among the French, Corot, Daumier, Degas, Forain, Lepère, Manet, Meryon, Toulouse-Lautrec; among the English, Bone, Dodd, Goff, Haden, Strang; then an important work by Whistler and Goya and leaves by Rops and Zorn. Also has beautiful paintings. Lugt 1956: During the 1914-1918 war, the collectort had his collection transported to Switzerland and, when the war was over, he decided, quite reluctantly, to sell it. In the spring of 1922 the sale was concluded in Zurich with the merchants Gust. Mayer, of Colnaghi & C ° of London, and Mr. A. MacDonald, then a partner of Harlow & C ° of New York, who bought the set at a price corresponding roughly to the total prices paid by Gerstenberg. This was a large sum, because he had acquired several of his finest pieces in the big sales between 1900 and 1914 against the big enthusiasts of the time such as Morgan, Gutmann, Rothschild etc. It was Gaiser, of the firm H. G. Gutekunst in Stuttgart, who had generally carried out his orders in the sales. MacDonald believed he had a buyer for the set in America, but when the collection arrived there those hopes were dashed by a change in economic conditions. He then sold the parts separately. We will get an idea of the importance of this collection by the following enumeration of the most beautiful pieces: among the Dürer, the Adam and Eve (from the Buccleuch and Hubert collections), the Saint-Eustache, the Mélancolie (from the collection Behaim, Dumesnil and Scholtz), the Knight of Death (from the Barnard and Hubert collections) and the Life of the Virgin series (from the St. Aubin collection); Dürer's work was almost complete. Quite remarkable was the Rembrandts' series, in which we note the Piece aux cent florins, sur Japon (collection Weber and Hubert), the Three Crosses, 1st state and 2nd state (collection Artaria and Hubert), the Little Tomb ( coll. John Wilson) and another proof on Japan, Death of the Virgin in Irstate (Josi coll.), St. Jerome, B. 103, unstead (Josi, Aylesford, Buccleuch and Hawkins coll.), the St. François (coll. Theobald); the series of portraits by Rembrandt was superb: Rembrandt himself drawing, B. 22, Ir état (from the Worlidge, Brit. Mus., Dighton and Theobald collections) and the same in the second state on Japan (Morrison collection), all the states of Clement de Jonghe, Jan Asselijn, Irtat (Josi, Aylesford, Buccleuch and Hubert coll.), old Haaring, 2nd state (same sources) and the young, 2nd state in Japan (Brodhurst and Lanna collection) , the Lutma in 1st state on japan (Josi, Aylesford, Baccleuch and Hubert collection) and a superb 2nd state (from the Firmin-Didot and Hubert collections), the Six in 3rd state (Ploos van Amstel collection); in landscapes: the three Trees (coll. Theobald), the three Chaumières (coll. Morgan and Lesecq des Tournelles), the Landscape with the tower, Ir état (coll. Aylesford, Holford and Hubert), the Campagne du peseur d ' gold, on Japan (Barnard, Holford and Theobald collection) and a State of Landscape with the drinking cow, on Japan (Theobald collection). Then a series of 51 Schongauer, including several of the first order, 8 of Hirschvogel, the portraits by van Dijck himself in first states (except D. 10 and 15, the most beautiful of the collection Theobald), beautiful series by Claude and van Ostade. The purchase included neither the important modern prints that Gerstenberg owned, nor his beautiful prints by Goya, nor a few drawings by the latter and Rembrandt. Gerstenberg was an enthusiastic collector who passionately loved his collection. When in 1922 the buyers announced their decision to acquire his old prints at the agreed price, he could not contain his tears. He later consoled himself by developing his series of watercolors and drawings of the French school of the nineteenth century, and he managed to own a magnificent set of Delacroix, Daumier, Degas, Monet and, in general, the Impressionists. . We do not know, at the present time, what happened to this part of his collection, but it is feared that part of it was lost or destroyed in the offices of the insurance company "Victoria" in Berlin or in its property in Silesia during the Russian invasion in 1945. The Toulouse-Lautrec which had been evacuated to Denmark were sold out of court after the war from 1939 to 1945. Gertstenberg died ,very old in 1935. The mark reproduced by us in L.2785 has rarely been used, but the origin of the prints is more easily recognized by the initial M, followed by a number (see L.1840c...
