Over the years she amassed a trove of artifacts and collectables which she began using to create assemblage art in the 1990’s. In 2000 she sold her business and moved to Cuyamaca, a remote community in the mountains outside of San Diego to devote herself exclusively to her artwork. In 2003 her work was interrupted when the Cedar Fire swept through San Diego county and destroyed the forest, her home & studio along with almost all of her collections and works of art. Following the fire she relocated to San Francisco, where she spent a decade concentrating on her art in her studio in SOMA and exhibiting at galleries in the Bay Area. In 2015 she returned to San Diego and now works out of her studio in La Jolla, exhibiting there and in Los Angeles.
Kat Flyn refers to herself as an Assemblage Sculptor and her works as Political Art or Protest Art. She separates herself from other assemblage artists in that she only employs “saved” as opposed to “found” objects in her work; and her pieces always have a political or cultural narrative to them rather than being surreal or abstract. This artwork is intended as a gently rotating, dimensional mandala. It has a baroque-upcycled aesthetic that playfully transcends the utility of the can-tab. The shape recalls a chandelier or and upside-down layer cake. Sparkling moiré patterns emerge in the hanging chains as viewers circumnavigate the art. One can experience the artwork as a sparkling, crystalline mystery from a distance, then as
a familiar but incalculable marvel up close.

PAUL VILLINSKI has created studio and large-scale artworks for more than three decades. Villinski was born in York, Maine, USA, in 1960, son of an Air Force navigator. He has lived and worked in New York City since 1982. Kathleen Vance is an environmental artist who creates sculptures and installations that connect people to local aspects of nature that are overlooked or under-appreciated.
Vance received her B.F.A. from Pratt Institute and her M.F.A. from Hunter College in sculpture. She has received numerous grants and awards for her artwork including: a travel grant to research the geo-thermal regions of Iceland, a grant from the Puffin foundation for public sculpture, a development grant from Aljira, Center for Contemporary Art in conjunction with the Creative Capital Foundation, and a grant from the Brooklyn Arts council which aided the development and implementation of an outdoor community based art project in East New York. Ms. Vance was artist in resident in Berlin, Germany, presenting a workshop on environmental arts in connection with the Grunewald Parks Department in Germany.
Her sculptural installations have been featured at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, the Orlando Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the Peeler Art Center, the Weisman Art Museum, the Brandywine River Museum of Art, the Bruce Museum, the Ellen Noel Art Museum, Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, the Hillwood Art Museum, VOLTA New York, PULSE New York and Miami, and EXPO Chicago, as well as many private and public institutions. Kathleen Vance has exhibited extensively in New York and internationally and continues to live and work in New York.

It all starts with Linnie Rose Oswald. She was my Great-Grandmother, the eighth of Elnore Rose's nine children. (All but one were girls.) During the 1920s she operated her own business and posed for a photo beside the laundry's vehicle. Family stories tell of a feisty red-headed woman with a will of iron, a temper, and a very strong work ethic who drove down the middle of Huntington, West Virginia's city streets as if she owned them. In all likelihood, Linnie needed these qualities. Being a female business woman in this era had to be hard! She would have gotten the right to vote around then. Later, Linnie owned almost a block of town and rented apartments. I remember her from the days when managing her apartments was problematic. Linnie lived to be ninety-six years old but dementia took her years beforehand. I was in college when she died in a nursing home in Kentucky. The last time I saw her, she wasn't aware of the visit. Her mind was elsewhere ... talking about the clothes she was making and the quilts she would stitch. What a woman!
