Aimé-Jules Dalou, said Jules Dalou (1838-1902) was a French sculptor, born from Protestants glovers craftsmen who raised in secularism and love of the Republic. Jules Dalou was very young talented for modeling and drawing, which earned him the attention of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, who made him entered in 1852 in the Little School, the future National School of Decorative Arts in Paris. Jane DeDecker’s energetic and dynamic bronze sculptures serve as a reflection of her own life experiences and those of her closely-knit family. Her twelve nieces and nephews are the primary source of her inspiration, though DeDecker’s sculptures are not portraits. In fact, her loose style leaves her viewers with room for interpretation, so as to see their own lives within her sculptures. This imprecision, combined with her unique ability to capture specific moments to which each viewer can relate on a personal level, regardless of age, give DeDecker’s work a timeless quality that spans generations.
DeDecker began her artistic training as a painter at the University of Northern Colorado, until a professor, noticing her joy in the portrayal of shapes and forms, suggested she try her hand at sculpture. Taking his advice, DeDecker went on to study at Gobelins School of Tapestry in Paris, and in returning to Colorado, spent five years as master craftsman to the notable bronze sculptor George Lundeen.

Mackaay works with recognizable shape:: women, men and animals, with a pointer at the primal form. Archetypal motives like warriors, women, horses, archers, lovecouples, created with his own signature. An example of this work is the wellknown ‘Gouden Kalf’, the big prize of the ‘Nederlands Film Festival’, designed in 1980 by Mackaay, commissioned by Jos Stelling, filmdirector and initiator of the festival.
There has been big developments in his work after the calf, but the basic forms are still to be found in his work. The renewal in his work has been a internal fight, between the two sides of his brain. The wild artist animal and the changed, peaceful, contemplative sculptor. The last one won! Not only did he change as a human being, his work changed with him. Big, tough, expressionist bronzes and stone statues whith the woman and animal as favourite subject, changed in touching, intimate bronze sculptures.
In the early work of Mackaay, the masters of the past were more visible, like Marino Marini and Ossip Zadkine. Now it seems, the artist is letting go of the past and found his own form language, after all the highs and lows in his life.
