18th century painting of the Dalbiac family in the gardens of a country house

The painting depicts James (Jacques) Dalbiac, his wife Louise (ne de la Porte) and their five children, James, Charles, Louise, Marianne and Martha in the ornamental gardens of a grand country estate. The extensive gardens extend into the distance with gardeners working in the background and figures strolling through the avenues of trees. A peacock and peahen can be seen on the wall to the left and a potted orange tree to the right. Louise Dalbiac holds an orange taken from the orange tree, aluding to the family's faith and their loyalty to the protestant King William of Orange and their adopted country. The Dalbiacs were wealthy London silk and velvet merchants of French Huguenot origin who had fled France at the end of the 17th century to escape persecution for their protestant faith. England offered safe refuge and their skills and industriousness allowed them to establish one of the most successful businesses in London's Spitalfields which became a new centre of the silk trade, effectively leading to the collapse of the once dominant French silk industry. Both sons, James and Charles followed their father and Uncle into the family business, successfully growing the family's fortune and each going on to own their own country estates. A conversation piece is a genre of painting used to describe group portraits of families and friends, often depicted with their servants and family pets and set within an elegantly furnished interior or the garden of a grand country house. They were a celebration of the intimacy of family relations as well as a sign of status, property and the power of succession. The informality of conversation pieces grew popular in 18th century England, allowing the sitters to present themselves in a more relaxed pose, perhaps engaged in intellectual conversation or showing their talents or interests. In this present portrait, the Dalbiacs are shown richly dressed and and at leisure in a grand country house setting, conveying their success and cultural and social aspirations. Charles Philips (c.1703–1747) was an English artist known for painting a number of portraits and conversation pieces for noble and Royal patrons in the mid-eighteenth century. At the time he produced this painting, Jones was living at Heathercroft, Balham Hill in London. Given the size and quality of the work it was most likely an exhibition piece. The topography and landscape suggest that this is the Dorset coast, one of his favourite places to paint. Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. By 1867, he had become a successful artist and they had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874 he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. Jones became well known for specialising in paintings of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. He spent his time travelling around visiting areas such as Devon, Dorset, Kent, Sussex and the Highlands. However, it is for his skilful painting of sheep that he is perhaps best known, and for which earned him the nickname of ‘Sheep’ Jones. As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Watercolour on paper Paper size: 4 x 5 inches Framed size: 19 x 19.75 inches PROVENANCE A gift from Joseph Mallord William Turner to Miss Amelia Hawksworth (later Mrs Hotham), niece of Walter Fawkes. The watercolour descended through the ownership of Amelia Hawksworth, daughter of Francis Fawkes ( Walter Fawkes's brother) who was the main compiler of the Ornithological Collection (Miss Hawksworth owned five other bird studies by Turner). Private collection, London LITERATURE: For similar works by J M W Turner see Anne Lyles, The Tate catalogue for the exhibition 'Turner and Natural History, The Farnley Project', 1988. The present watercolour was drawn circa 1815-1820 for Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall, for his Ornithological Collection Volume IV. Between 1808 and 1824, Turner visited Farnley Hall in Yorkshire to stay with the Fawkes family. Turner felt at home at Farnley - the Fawkes daughters reminded him of his own. He helped illustrate a five volume ornithological scrap book for the Fawkes children, making watercolour studies of the birds for the children to stick in opposite the pages on which feathers from similar birds were attached. His bird portraits were most effective, most "life-like", when in fact the bird was dead ! His watercolours of a live robin and goldfinch have a more hesitant touch. At this time Turner enjoyed the patronage first of Edward Lascelles, the heir to Harewood, and after 1808, of the radical landlord Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall, near Otley. He became a close friend of the Fawkes family with whom he stayed for most summers until 1824. The last owner of Old Farnley Hall was Francis Fawkes, a rich widower with no direct heirs. When Francis Fawkes died in 1786 he left the house to Walter Beaumont Hawksworth of Hawksworth Hall, on condition that Hawksworth adopt the Fawkes name by Royal Licence. Walter Fawkes brought in architect John Carr of York to make extensions to the house, but he died before the work was completed, and Farnley Hall was passed on to his son, also called Walter who also took the Fawkes name and was known as Walter Ramsden Fawkes. It was this Walter who was a great friend of J M W Turner. Anne Lyles has confirmed the attribution and writes: "Everything fits in relation to the style of the watercolour and most especially the provenance - in the Turner and Natural History exhibition catalogue of 1988 we know that Amelia Hawksworth (Mrs Hotham) owned three studies of birds' heads by J M W Turner (previously with the Maas Gallery, and numbers 36, 37 and 61 in that catalogue) as well as two studies of dead game by the artist (catalogue numbers 59 and 63, the latter untraced in 1988). Interestingly, catalogue numbers 36 and 37 (the Merganser and the Smew) seem also originally to have been intended for Volume IV of the Ornithological Collection - it is likely that the "Study of the Head of a Moorhen...

The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles. Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879. During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co. He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum. The Herald, dressed in yellow livery plays a fanfare as the others prepare for the arrival of the Royal boat. Arthur David Mccormick was a painter of historical, naval, and genre scenes who was born in Coleraine, Ulster in Northern Ireland on 14 October, 1860. After attending his local school, he studied at the Government School of Design in Belfast. He then moved to London where he enrolled at the Royal College of Art in 1883. To support his studies he also contributed drawings and designs to the English Illustrated Magazine and Illustrated London News. McCormick made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1889 continuing to exhibit there throughout his life. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1890, becoming a member in 1897 and at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Alpine Club Gallery. As well as being a yachtsman he also took an interest in mountaineering and on 5 February 1892 joined Sir Martin Conway’s expedition to the Karakoram Himalayas as their artist. He produced more than 300 illustrations, mainly watercolour paintings which appeared in Conway's 1894 book ‘Climbing and exploration in the Karakoram Himalayas’. He later published his own book ‘An artist in the Himalayas’ using his pencil sketches from the expedition. He married Helen MacAlpine-Woods at Strean Church, Newtonwards, Ireland on 25 September, 1894. The couple lived at 58 Queens Road, St John’s Wood where their only daughter Helen Gladys was born in 1895. During the same year, he travelled with Clinton T. Dent’s on his expedition to the Caucasus Mountains, producing a number of sketches and drawings. He was also made a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1895 in recognition of his work. After the death of his wife in 1899, he remained at Queens Road from where he continued to work and exhibit, employing a governess to help with his daughter. When the Ulster Arts Club was formed in 1902 he was among its first honorary members. In 1905, he was made a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and in 1906 became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. On 7 May, 1906 he married Helen (Nellie) Elizabeth K Laker, his daughter’s governess. In addition to painting he also produced illustrations for many books mostly related to travel and adventure. He was employed by John Player & Son in 1927 to paint the sailor's head and shoulders for their cigarette packets as well as producing a number of oil paintings which were used as promotional posters. Around 1934 he moved to 53 Colet Gardens, Hammersmith, where he spent the rest of his life. He died in London, aged 83, on 12 March, 1943. Examples of his work can be found at the Alpine Club Collection, Coleraine Museum, Grundy Art Gallery, Imperial War Museum, National Museum of Wales, National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth, Newport Museum, The Box Plymouth and Williamson Art Gallery. Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850). Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). The Perthshire was built in Dundee in 1874 and was owned by Thomas Law of 123 Hope Street, Glasgow. The red ensign flying on the mizzenmast indicates it was a British merchant or passenger ship. The owner may well have commissioned the painting to commemorate its maiden voyage. Ailsa Craig, pictured to the far left, is a small uninhabited island off the west mainland of Scotland in the outer Firth of Clyde. The island is made up of volcanic rock which was quarried in the past and is now only used as a source of microgranite to make curling stones. The island is known by a number of different names including A' Chreag (the rock) and Creag Alasdair (Alasdair's rock). It was also sometimes referred to in the past as ‘Paddy’s Milestone’ as it marked the halfway of the sea journey Belfast to Glasgow made by Irish Emigrants seeking work. Richard Ball Spencer was born in London’s East End on 11 November, 1812 to John and Elizabeth Ball. His father was a grocer and the family lived at 106 York Road in Mile End. Both Richard and his brother Thomas were given their mother’s maiden name as their middle names. By 1841, he had established himself as a marine painter specialising in ship portraits and was influenced by artists such as Joseph Heard (1799-1859), William John Huggins (1781-1845) and Robert Salmon (c1775-1845).
