Bermúdez was a painter associated with the Cuban Modernist movement, and best known for his colorful and humorous depictions of everyday life. Born in Havana, he studied painting at the Alejandro School of Fine Art in Havana, and later traveled to Mexico City to study drawing at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Art.
