Supernatural Being, Pre-Columbian Gold Pendant, Costa Rica, circa 800 to 1500 AD

Southern Costa Rica or Western Panama, circa 800 to 1500 AD. A very fine example of the goldwork of the Veraguas-Chiriqui-Diquis region. A pendant in Carbonera style of a supernatural being, a composite monster with human torso and feline (probably jaguar) head. The figure is set in a frame decorated with little animal heads, one at each corner. The hands have also turned into animal heads. In place of genitalia is a stylized serpent head suspended by a twisted cord that was supposed to continue across the frame. A minor casting accident prevented it form being attached to the frame. A modern goldsmith would solder in two short lengths of twisted wire, but the ancient goldsmith did not have the equipment to make such repair. A double thread ending in spirals goes across the frame behind the neck of the figure, helping to fill up the frame and avoiding a large empty space. The word "thread" reminds us that the twisted and straight cords were, in the original wax model of the pendant really extruded wax threads, turned into metal by the lost wax (cire perdue) process. The braid pattern on the frame is illusory, just two twisted threads of extruded wax laid side by side. The goldsmith made the toes out of extruded wax thread too, very decorative as well. This is an outstanding Italian 18th century carved wood polychromed sculpture of Virgin Mary. The Sculpture is hand painted with some remains of a gold gilt in few places and originated until lately in a private Villa in Tuscany (Italy). The colors are typical red, blue and green are spectacular on this large figure. The Virgin's hands are joined together in a prayer, while standing on a pedestal on the both sides of which are devil's horns (bottom left side horn missing ) symbolising Holly Mary defeating the Evil, protected by the Holly Ghost and an Angel. Large 18th Century Wooden Carving of an Angel with Cherubs
Located in Dallas, TX
This endearing hand carved wooden statue depicts a large central angel, flanked by two winged cherubs. The grouping has been stripped recently, allowing the skill of the carver to be displayed in full. The removal of the original finish also gives additional character to the statue, as the centuries old repairs are now visible, as seen on the leg of the cherub to the angel’s left. The angel is touching the hand of one cherub and the top of the head of the other as though protecting them. They are standing upon a platform with stylized circular clouds swirling around them. The tall angel wears a robe with tassels draped over his shoulders and tied at his waist. The winged cherubs are shown as full figures, which was often seen in the 18th century, as well as during the Renaissance. In the Baroque period, they were often shown only as winged cherub heads. The piece is of Western European origin, possibly the Netherlands, Belgium, or Germany. At nearly 4 feet by 4 feet, this statue is of a particularly large size, especially considering it is a figural grouping. The back of the piece is a series of plain, horizontal boards...
