Neoclassical Sculptures

NEOCLASSICAL STYLE

Neoclassical design emerged in Europe in the 1750s, as the Age of Enlightenment reached full flower. Neoclassical furniture took its cues from the styles of ancient Rome and Athens: symmetrical, ordered, dignified forms with such details as tapered and fluted chair and table legs, backrest finials and scrolled arms.

Over a period of some 20 years, first in France and later in Britain, neoclassical design — also known as Louis XVI, or Louis Seize — would supersede the lithe and curvaceous Rococo or Louis XV style.

The first half of the 18th century had seen a rebirth of interest in classical antiquity. The "Grand Tour" of Europe, codified as a part of the proper education of a patrician gentleman, included an extended visit to Rome. Some ventured further, to sketch the ruins of ancient Greece. These drawings and others — particularly those derived from the surprising and rich archaeological discoveries in the 1730s and ’40s at the sites of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum — caused great excitement among intellectuals and aesthetes alike.

Neoclassical furniture is meant to reflect both grace and power. The overall appearance of neoclassical chairs, tables and cabinetry is strong and rectilinear. These pieces are, in effect, classical architecture in miniature: chair and table legs are shaped like columns; cabinets are constructed with elements that mirror friezes and pediments.

Yet neoclassicism is enlivened by gilt and silver leaf, marquetry, and carved and applied ornamental motifs based on Greek and Roman sculpture: acanthus leaves, garlands, laurel wreaths, sheaves of arrow, medallions and chair splats are carved in the shapes of lyres and urns. Ormolu — or elaborate bronze gilding — was essential to French design in the 18th and 19th centuries as a cornerstone of the neoclassical and Empire styles.

As you can see from the furniture on these pages, there is a bit of whimsy in such stately pieces — a touch of lightness that will always keep neoclassicism fresh.

Pair of Antique Marble Busts
Located in Tyrone, Northern Ireland
An extremely well carved pair of Statuary Carrara marble busts on marble pedestals, by important sculptor Odoardo Fantacchiotti.  Odoardo Fantacchiotti (11 May 1811–4 June 1877) was an Italian sculptor of the late-Neoclassic period. He was born in Rome, but his family moved to Florence. In 1820, he enrolled in the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. At the Academy, he studied under S. Ricci, and first started exhibiting in 1828. Gaining the patronage of the Grand Duke, he continued his studies, following the ideas of Aristodemo Costoli of depicting the "bello naturale". In 1839 at the Academy, he exhibited the work of the Massacre of the Innocents. In 1840 he was named professor at the Academy. Among his public works are the statue of Boccaacio and dell'Accorso for the ground floor niches of the courtyard of the Uffizi, medallions commemorating Francesco Redi and the bust of Ferdinando II de Medici for the Museo della Specola, a statue of Sallustio Bandini (now at the Accademia dei Georgeofili, but initially planned for the loggia of the Uffizi. A marble Virgin...

Antique Style Plaster Plaque Depicting Bucranium on Stand
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
This 20th century antique style plaster plaque depicts a bucranium in striking high relief. Symbolic of Greek and Roman architecture, a bucranium is a decorative motif of an ox or bull skull among swags and garlands of foliage. This embellishment was commonly used in classical architecture and Doric temples of ancient Rome and later during a neoclassical revival in the late Georgian period. This 20th century plaster depiction is an intricate example of the bucranium, modelled in plaster in high relief and mounted on a bespoke steel stand for display...

The fountain. Polychrome terracotta. 20th century, after CARRIER-BELLEUSE
Located in Madrid, ES
The fountain. Polychrome terracotta. 20th century, following models of CARRIER-BELLEUSE, AlbertErnest (Aisne, 1824-Sèvres, 1887). The figure shows a boy, lying down and almost totally naked, with his head enhanced by a golden leaf crown. It is shown with a shell (with touches in gold), taking water from a pitcher next to it, thus recalling the allegories of the rivers or of the birth of the same of Ancient Rome. It is necessary to compare the present work with the one entitled “La Source” by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, preserved, for example, at the Art Institute of Chicago or the Portland Museum of Art (of which there are a number of variants, changing the characters and the material used). Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was a French sculptor and draftsman trained with David d'Angers and at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He achieved international recognition from his participation in the Salon of the French Artists of 1861 (Third Medal), reaching outstanding works such as various busts of...

George III Blue John Panther
Located in New Orleans, LA
One of the only known sculptures rendered in Blue John to exist in the world, this extraordinary George III panther exemplifies Georgian sophistication. Georgian — and later Regency — aesthetics revived classical themes of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. With a proud stance, gaping jaw and unyielding gaze, the stately panther closely resembles the grand ancient Roman panthers often carved from marble as trapezophoros table supports. The regal cat rests atop a plinth, also made of Blue John, with Siena and Ashford marble detailing. The intrinsic and richly hued mineral inclusions of the Blue John replicate the textures and colors of the animal’s fur. The rare stone is a variety of natural calcium fluorite found exclusively in Derbyshire, England. It was first discovered in the early 18th century, but its mining did not being until circa 1760. Blue John was a wildly popular material in the decorative arts during the Georgian and Regency...
