The Honorable John Maler Collier (British, 1850-1934) was an important artist who painted portraits, dramatic themes, and landscapes. Maler painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style, and was one of the most prominent portrait painters of his generation. He was educated at the Eton School and studied art in Munich and Heidelberg, as well as at the Slade School under Poynter and in Paris under Laurens. He also was encouraged by Millais and Alma-Tadema.
Presented is a large hillside and river landscape signed oil painting by Collier. Framed it measures 48" wide, 30.5" high and 3" deep. Canvas is 42" wide and 24" high. Frame has very light wear. Painting is in very fine condition.
Collier was one of the 24 founding members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, of which he became Vice President and was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He exhibited no fewer than one hundred and thirty paintings at the Royal Academy and one hundred and sixty five at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as many others in galleries throughout the country and abroad. He was the author of The Primer of Art (1882), A Manual of Oil Painting (1886) and The Art of Portrait Painting (1905). Early 19th Century Portrait of the Marsh Family Twins, by Thomas Arrowsmith (English: 1772 - 1834), circa 1830, an oil on canvas group portrait of the celebrated five children of the Marsh family of Boston. The two pair of twin girls and their younger brother became well known on both sides of the Atlantic in their day, because sets of twins were pretty rare, and these children were so ridiculously cute. Apparently the greatest artists of their day were all clamoring to paint their portraits. The Magazine Antiques ran an article on the children and their popularity about 20 years ago.
The short hair cuts sported by the girls are quite striking, and are actually not as odd and rare as many people assume. While longer hair enhanced with ringlets and other curls were very much the popular fashion, a good number of parents did boldly break away with these daring short bobs. Perhaps they were the "bohemians" of their day. The style grew in popularity, even among adults, following the French Revolution: dubbed "Guillotine Haircuts" they declared sympathy for the deposed royals.
In this particular instance, I believe the short hair was chosen because it focused more attention on the beautiful faces, and lessened the variations in height and hair color to make them all look even more alike.

As a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA) and the American Academy of Equine Art, Roy is an artist of international repute.
Roy began work as a professional artist at the age of 14 while studying in the evenings at Manchester College of Art. In the early 1960s he moved to London and worked as a freelance artist and illustrator.
He has had many exhibitions including the Royal Academy, but the turning point of his career was in 1972 when he visited a racecourse and fell in love with the ‘sport of kings’. This finely executed oil on canvas is an accomplished historic copy after Claude Lorrain’s celebrated Italianate river landscapes, specifically related to his Landscape with Merchants (c. 1630s), held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. The composition also bears a close resemblance to the 1769 engraving by Boydell and James Mason, after a painting once in the distinguished collection of Robert Trevor, 4th Baron Trevor, later 1st Viscount Hampden.
The scene features cargo ships along the tranquil banks of the River Po, enveloped in the soft, atmospheric light for which Claude Lorrain (1600–1682) is universally revered. Executed in the idiom of the Grand Tour period, the painting exemplifies the classical Arcadian themes sought by aristocratic collectors travelling through Italy in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
This work is a particularly elegant example of the period's taste for Claudean compositions, balancing architectural elements with expansive vistas and golden, diffused light. The canvas has been professionally relined and restored, housed in a contemporary frame that complements the work’s scale and palette. Minor craquelure and darkening to areas of the blue and green pigments remain consistent with age, enhancing its historic charm.
