About the artist; Gil Elvgren studied at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts before transferring to the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he graduated in 1936.[3] Elvgren then joined the stable of artists at Stevens and Gross, Chicago's most prestigious advertising agency. He became a protégé of the artist Haddon Sundblom. In 1937, Gil began painting calendar pin-ups for Louis F. Dow, one of America's leading publishing companies, during which time he created about 60 works on 28 × 22 in canvas and distinguished them with a printed signature. This is classic Louis Armstrong in a print by the prolific American photographer Slim Aarons, known for his images of celebrities. The setting here is unusual as the jazz great Louis Armstrong visits Rome in 1949. He rides a Vespa scooter outside the Coliseum in Rome, as his wife Lucille holds on for dear life. She is controlling the Vespa as she steers the handlebars. Her husband is in his element and points his trumpet to the sky. Clearly, he could multitask. This poster-print was a lucky find at an estate sale in East Hollywood where we found many collectible examples of framed works from the collection of an avid art lover. Lillian Lent lived and worked in the Woodstock Artist colony in New York. She attended the Tyler School of Fine Art in Philadelphia. This rare print of two young men in a rather provocative pose, Andy Warhol used a photograph taken in preparation of his poster for Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s film Querelle. In 1982, Warhol was commissioned by the German film director Rainer Fassbinder, to design a poster for his adaptation of Jean Genet’s classic novel, ‘Querelle’. The story of a sailor’s journey into the sexual underworld of a French port appealed to Warhol’s cinematic sensibilities and could easily have been one of his own productions (he had started making films in the 1960s). This design is based on a photograph by Warhol of two young men with bare shoulders. It is characteristic of his work in the 1980s, incorporating elements of both hand-drawn and photographic screen printing. He focuses attention on the suggestively licking tongue by splashing it with a vibrant red.
