Night Flight, Abstract Painting
By Janine Etherington
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
After a flight back and forth across the country, Janine's exploration in her studio started with a playful mixing of colors directly on the canvas. A shape emerged in that process that she chose to repeat and then incorporate with a series of glazes. Stepping back and looking at the result, the image reminded her of those hours spent moving through the clouds to finally find herself back home.

About the Artist
Janine’s abstract artworks are created with measured doses of both intuition and analysis. “My work develops as a series of calls and responses,” she says. She adds color, letting gravity pull the paint around. She then responds to the direction of the composition with additional marks, adding and subtracting. The incorporation of recognizable forms, specifically letters and numbers, indicates the influences of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg on Janine’s work. Janine is also inspired by listening to jazz music. She is a musician herself, and plays in a local Zimbabwean marimba ensemble when she’s not painting.

William Stephens Shields, Jr., 1925 - 2010 "Zone Two" 1995 Oil on canvas 48"x48" artist framed Signed lower right William Stephens Shields, Jr., 1925 - 2010 He was born in san Francisco, in 1931, Bill moved to Texas, where he grew up. Moved to New York in 1940 and later joined the Naval Air Corps at the age of 18. He served as an Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. At the end of WWII, Bill returned to Texas. At 21, Bill re-focused his energy and enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Art as an Illustration major. What followed was a whirlwind of success, great friendships and a sense of belonging he had never before experienced. Art was his calling and the art-world could not have been less prepared for the likes of Bill Shields. He took them by storm, first Houston, then San Francisco, followed by New York in the late 60's. For 35 years, Bill produced some of the country's best illustrations: fresh, playful, loose and innovative. His illustrations were coveted by such clients as Bantam Books, Time Life, MacMillan Publishing Co., and were awarded numerous gold medals by the Societies of Illustrators in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and the Houston Artists Guild. Later, following inspirational trips to Mexico and France, Bill shifted his attention to the self-directed world of fine art. After years of sculpting, making assemblages, painting nudes and landscapes, he settled on the exploration of large abstract oil paintings. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Connecticut and New York. Young Man Sidelined (Rush Week Sisyphus I) - Contemporary Painting (Pink+Blue)
By Vivian Liddell
Located in Gilroy, CA
"Young Man Sidelined (Rush Week Sisyphus I)" is an original contemporary painting by Georgia-based artist Vivian Liddell. This work is part of her new 2022 series titled "Myth of Sisyphus." As a multidisciplinary artist, Liddell brings a dynamic approach to her vivid, colorful two-dimensional pieces. This stunning abstract piece has bold forms and strong value creating a surreal landscape. From the artist: "Gender and power are core concepts in my work. I’ve spent two decades in “The Classic City” (Athens, Georgia), surrounded by a dual Greek culture. Fraternities and sororities separate students by gender and play a part in cementing gender roles and power structures for the next generation; ubiquitous Classical architecture (often accompanied by manicured landscape) is a constant reminder of Western ideals. After a career of painting the female figure and exploring themes related to the male gaze and the lingering inequalities that women face, I’ve focused the past five years on the male figure and his domain. My education was dominated by Western art history, where women were seen as muses; I’m reversing this traditional dynamic between the male artist/intellectual and his female subject. I create tiny “plays” with handmade props and puppet plasticine figures to reenact imagined dramas that might happen on any given home game day...

Signature: Signed lower right and reverse Condition: Very good This gestural abstract is by Sven Inge Hoglund (aka Sven Inge). It is in good condition, with a highly worked and textured surface. It appears to be primarily oil paint with sand. The edges are painted black. Therefore, I believe the artist intended the painting to be without a frame. Myth of Sisyphus X (A Man Defines Himself by his make-believe)

"Myth of Sisyphus X (A Man Defines Himself by his make-believe)" is an original contemporary painting by Georgia-based artist Vivian Liddell. This work is part of her new 2022 series titled "Myth of Sisyphus." As a multidisciplinary artist, Liddell brings a dynamic approach to her vivid, colorful two-dimensional pieces. Myth of Sisyphus II (Abstract thought returns to prop of flesh) - (Pink+Black)
By Vivian Liddell
Located in Gilroy, CA
"Myth of Sisyphus II (Abstract thought returns to prop of flesh)" is an original contemporary painting by Georgia-based artist Vivian Liddell. This work is part of her new 2022 series titled "Myth of Sisyphus." As a multidisciplinary artist, Liddell brings a dynamic approach to her vivid, colorful two-dimensional pieces. This particular piece has a bold contrast between black chains and a pastel background.
