His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, Mississippi. Ceroli is one of the most influential artists of the Italian post-war period. Ceroli moved to Rome at the age of ten where he later graduated from 'Accademia delle Belle Arti'. At the Art Institute he worked under the guidance of Leoncillo Leonardi, Pericle Fazzini and Ettore Colla, where he experimented with the use of ceramic. In 1958, he first exhibited these works at the Premium Spoleto. In the same year Ceroli held his first solo exhibition at Galleria San Sebastianello of Rome. During 1959 he began to experiment with new materials, particularly with raw wood, such as Russian pinewood. He used these materials to create silhouetted shapes in his furniture and objects that related simplistically to the surrounding space. In the 1960's Ceroli took part in exhibitions related to the "Arte de Povera" group. He had also been involved as screenplay director collaborating with "II Teatro Stabile" in Turin and with "La Scala" In Milan. He was part of the generation of Italian post war artists that included Aligliero Boetti, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Pino Pascali, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mimmo Rotella, Emilio Vedova. “Headed to Market, 1916”
By Everett Shinn
Located in Southampton, NY
Original drawing of a woman heading to market by the well known American artist, Everett Shinn. Mixed media work created with charcoal, pastel and gouache. Signed with the artist’s initials lower right and dated 1916. Condition is very good. Under glass. Matted and in a period gold frame with restorations. Overall framed measurements are 23.5 by 17.25 inches. Provenance: A New York City estate. Everett Shinn (1876 – 1953) Everett Shinn, a realist artist associated with the Ashcan School and member of “The Eight” was born in New Jersey in 1876. After showing an aptitude for the arts as a child, at age 15, Shinn was enrolled at the Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. He quickly moved on to classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and by the age of 17, he was working as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Press. While working at the Press, Shinn befriended fellow artists William J. Glackens, George Luks, and John Sloan. This group, with Robert Henri and Joseph Laub, established the Charcoal Club, a social and intellectual sort of alternative art school. In 1897, Shinn moved to New York City to work as an illustrator at the New York World. He became fascinated by the drama of the city. While visiting Europe in 1900, Shinn took interest in the work of the Impressionists, particularly those of Degas. Degas’ influence can be read in Shinn’s depictions of American theater. From his acquaintances in the theater world, Shinn began to paint decorative “rococo revivalist” murals in the homes of the wealthy elite. He also worked extensively in pastel, portraying the rough life of the city. In 1908, Shinn exhibited alongside his Charcoal Club associates, with the addition of Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast...

Large Painting Photo Collage Martin Luther King African American Civil Rights
Located in Surfside, FL
This depicts civil rights icon MLK, the Statue of Liberty, Iwo Jima, an assemblage of mixed media photographic images and painted collaged elements. A powerful, moving work, an ode to the black civil rights movement. John M. Mitchell is originally from North Carolina, and as an art student at North Carolina Central University, he was involved with the Civil Rights movement including participating and getting arrested at a sit-in protest in Durham in 1963. After graduating, he was one of the first art teachers to take a position at the newly integrated schools in his home state. Mitchell continued his education in the 1990s and earned an MFA in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1993. He later served as a professor there from 1998-2006. Of his inspiration to create, Mitchell says: "A lot of my work is based on my experiences during the Civil Rights movement," he says. "I see art making as a 'record' of experiences. My bittersweet past, growing up in the segregated South, inspires the content, focus and narrative of my work." Savannah-based artist John Mitchell believes that a home is more than a simple edifice. Rather, he argues that the sociological, psychological, architectural, and historical associations embedded in the structure “tell us about our culture, our lives. It tells us about where we come from.” Mitchell's signature shotgun house constructions, crafted from found materials and scraps of newspaper headlines, reference his childhood in North Carolina, where such modest architectural structures were once commonplace. In "ALA 1963," he uses the shotgun shape to create a heartfelt memorial to a group of African-American girls killed in a racially motivated church bombing in Alabama nearly 50 years ago. He also incorporates the shotgun symbol in "Victims," a powerful reflection upon crime in Savannah in the early 1990s, which reveals how little has changed over the past two decades. Mitchell's mixed media constructions operate, in many ways, like memory itself. Scraps, fragments and pieces loosely cohere around a central idea, making symbolic and metaphorical connections. In these richly narrative and boldly stream-of-conscious assemblages, the whole truly is greater than the sum of its parts. Mitchell's jazz collages...

Books as Objects "Greenbaum, an early conceptualist, burned books in the 1960s, exhibiting the remains as 'corpses.' Today, he makes fetishistic notebooks filled with colored paper and scribbled equations, accretions of feathers and Rhoplex." "Marty Greenbaum and Barton Lidice Benes destroy texts to create sculpture: Benes 'Bound Book,' a literal rope and wax imprisonment, and Greenbaum's 'Cutting Up,' a mixed media paste over of muted colors." Some of his most notable artist books include: "Batman" 1963-67, "In '84 Returned in 2004". Two stories about Marty from James Pernotto: we met at William Weege print shop in 1974 when he drove out from NYC with Alan Shields and Paco Grande and I was a lithography printer hired to work with them. Alan recalled on the trip out that Marty was working on his altered books and putting airplane glue on the pages and lighting it with a match. Enough said. I printed for Marty.
