Phaidon and Artspace are pleased to present day at night, a new series of ten unique embroidered prints on canvas by contemporary artist Michael Raedecker. Released on the occasion of Raedecker’s new comprehensive Phaidon survey, each limited edition includes a signed copy of the publication as well as a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
Since the beginning of his career as a painter, Raedecker has incorporated embroidery into his works as a means of challenging the conventional hierarchy of fine art techniques. His new day at night editions include thread, paint, and glitter hand-applied throughout, making each piece a singular work of art.

French landscape tapestry probably Beauvais, circa 1750. Although not a product of the Royal Gobelins factory in Paris, this pictorial landscape tapestry is extremely Fine with silk highlights. The French royal tapestry works in the Gobelins made masterpieces for the crown. For the nobility and bourgeoisie, Beauvais was the source for attractive wall hangings in all sizes, degrees of fineness and subject matters. Rural scenes particularly appealed to urban collectors. Here two white geese cavort under a sandy bluff. The hillock is framed on each side by trees, one a blasted trunk, and topped by a picturesque rustic windmill. Realistically depicted flowers, overhanging grasses and luxuriant foliage give a summer air to the image. In addition, a startled bird, flies up to the right. The border is a trompe l’oeil gilt picture frame with corner bosses and low relief “carving”. The weave is quite Fine and is executed in wool with copious silk details. Although Jean Pillement...

Through the use of very long exposures taken with a telescope, Malin reveals stars and constellations too distant to be seen with the naked eye. The Witch’s Head nebula, the subject of this edition’s specially commissioned print, is 800 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Orion. As the colloquial name suggests, this heavenly duststorm has the pointed nose and crooked chin of a fairytale crone. In reality the nebula is quite blue, glowing in light reflected from the super-giant star, Rigel. The dusty formation of the witch’s silhouette is contrasted starkly with the glittering lights of the sky, in an ethereal composition that showcases the most wonderful collaboration between man and nature.

Mughal Indian Miniature

This Mughal miniature was painted at one of the princely courts of India. It depicts a raven-haired princess in a gold-trimmed saffron-colored silk sari. Under a glowering evening sky she dawdles on a white marble terrace, with a pet fawn on a leash, before a landscape dotted with buildings nestled amongst trees beyond a river. Her hair, falling loosely about her shoulders, rather than carefully dressed on her head, indicates that she is a maiden. The overall mood is one of expectancy. Perhaps walking a pet and catching an evening breeze is a pretext to escape palace scrutiny for a lovers’ assignation. In Mughal India tender sentiments were a bridge to the erotic – and if this seems contradictory, so too is the balance of realism and caricature, and naturalism with the schematic. Both are hallmarks of miniatures painted in this place and time.
The earliest Mughal Indian miniatures date to the 16th century. They were inspired by those painted at the refined Moslem courts of the neighboring Persian empire. They incorporated figures in spite of the Moslem faith’s proscription against depicting the human form. Such was the nature of sophisticated courtly life everywhere that beauty and pleasure trumped systems of morality. This was no less the case at the provincial Indian courts, where our miniature, marked by a charming pictorial naiveté, was most likely painted. Yet the artist was undeniably accomplished. His command of perspective, introduced by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century, is seen in the landscape, which rolls back to a distant horizon, contrary to the flat two-dimensional ones following Indian-painting traditions. And if Mughal artists were influenced by Western art, the compliment was returned by Rembrandt and Sir Joshua Reynolds, among others, who collected Indian miniatures (as did, perhaps, Giovanni Bellini who painted in Mughal style the famous miniature of a Persian man...
