The facts regarding the life of Walworth Stilson are limited to a history of the Stilson family, census reports of New Milford, Connecticut, and a few details from a letter regarding prints by Stilson donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Stilson’s father, William Bostwick Stilson, was born in New Milford, Connecticut on September 30, 1842, and worked as a civil engineer. His mother, Ida Cynthia Alford, was born in Oswego, New York on June 25, 1851. The two were married August 4, 1869. The couple resided in New Milford, where a son, Jay Alvord, was born April 24, 1870, a daughter Mabel Louise was born March 11, 1872, and William Walworth was born July 29, 1874. "I. Traces grotesques" is an Artist’s Proof Lithograph. “Proofs” are either pulled or printed, and the artist has the option to work out the color and quality issues as they come out of the process. The only real difference between the two is the restricted quantity of prints bearing the AP designation and not the quality of the print. This lithograph is signed and titled by the artist, Jean Dubuffet, which indicates his complete satisfaction with the print. It is from 1958 and a perfect example of his style, “Art Brut.” His idealistic approach to aesthetics embraced what is called “low art”, art by non-academically trained artists. It is sometimes referred to as “outsider art.”
He did study briefly at the Academie Julian, Paris, but eventually followed his own aesthetics which eschewed traditional standard of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making. This lithograph expresses the beauty he found in the meandering spontaneous black line.
Jean Dubuffet began painting at the age of seventeen and studied briefly at the Academie Julian, Paris. He painted off and on for the next 20 years. It was not until 1942 in the midst of WWII in France that he began the work which has distinguished him as an outstanding innovator in postwar Europe. It is said of his work that “he looked to the margins of the everyday – the art of prisoners, psychics, the uneducated, and the institutionalized – to liberate his own creativity and coining the term ‘Art Brut’.” Art Brut is a French term that translates as ‘raw art’, to describe art such as graffiti or naïve art which is made outside the academic tradition of fine art. His paintings from the early forties in brightly colored oils were soon followed by works in which he employed such unorthodox materials as cement, plaster, tar and asphalt-scraped, craved and cut and drawn upon with a rudimentary, spontaneous line.

It is mounted on upper edges of sheet under paste-partout, monogrammed and numbered #77/99 in a felt-tip pen on the lower right. He has signed it both on the photo and on the surrounding mat.
Alex Crieger is a world-reknown artist, designer and photographer. He lives and works in Los Angeles. His digital paintings have a rich and profound pictorial space that invites the viewer into it and makes him/her a silent participant of the story.
His digital collaged images depict celebrities in dreamlike settings as advertisement of luxury products giving the images an original new look. Alex’s digital paintings are composed of a variety of photographic quotes, designs, drawings and special effects to create photographic images he has not always taken but collaged into new uniquely composed settings.
Crieger is a photographer who makes art photographs we wish to be real. He’s created compositions of Steve McQueen or Brigitte Bardot that are more beautiful than the truth. A combination of sketches, digital effects and a spectacular design yield classic photographs that have never been photographed. For example, Brigitte still exudes in Paris and an eternally young James Dean poses for a propeller plane. Crieger has already produced several exhibitions at international art shows and galleries. Many museums of contemporary art also exhibit his work.
He studied visual communications and has worked as a photographer, director and designer for international clients in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London and Milan. His work as garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards and is produced in small editions. In addition to photography, Crieger also worked as a director and designer for international clients in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London and Milan.
