Fisherman’s Luck, Liberty Magazine Cover
By Leslie Thrasher
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Original cover for Liberty magazine, published March 8, 1930. Gwendolyn teases little Ulysses for having a bald head after she had taken scissors to it on Valentine’s Day. Lil had frantically taken Ulysses to the barber in an attempt to salvage the remains of his hair, but there wasn’t much left and now his head “felt like a sprouting cactus.” Gwen points to the aquarium on the table and ties a piece of cord to a ruler, attaches a safety pin, and dangles the line above the surface trying to catch a goldfish. “Gwen stood there, stubbornly waiting for the possible turn in her fisherman’s luck!” (Liberty magazine, March 8, 1930, p. 57) “For the Love o’ Lil: The Picture Story of an American Family” In 1926, under his long-term contract to produce a cover per week for Liberty magazine, Leslie Thrasher introduced a signature cast of characters that appeared each week, telling a serialized story through his illustrations. Liberty touted its new cover serial as “something no magazine has ever done before…Heretofore, all magazine cover...

Relativity, Liberty Magazine Cover
By Leslie Thrasher
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Original cover for Liberty magazine, published October 17, 1931. As Lil’s Aunt Ruby, a “social gadabout” and “blithe widow of many years’ standing” arrives at the Jenkins family home for a visit, Sandy tries to hide his irritation once he sees the massive amount of luggage she had in tow. Aunt Ruby shows off an enormous new diamond ring and coyly announces she is to be married that fall and that her new fiance would be arriving shortly. As Lil scrambles up some hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, Sandy hears a car pull up to the house and is shocked to discover that Aunt Ruby’s future husband is none other than Sandy’s boss! (Liberty magazine, October 17, 1931, p. 37) “For the Love o’ Lil: The Picture Story of an American Family” In 1926, under his long-term contract to produce a cover per week for Liberty magazine, Leslie Thrasher introduced a signature cast of characters that appeared each week, telling a serialized story through his illustrations. Telephone Exchange
By Constantin Alajalov
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Telephone Exchange, Cover of The Saturday Evening Post Magazine, April 7, 1962 Constantin Alajalov was the court artist to the Czar of Russia at the time of the Russian Revolution, barely escaping with his life before coming to America and getting a job illustrating for New Yorker magazine. He quickly adapted to the American way of life, and his cartoon-like drawings made his admiring public laugh at themselves. His many covers for The Saturday Evening Post were amusing, unique and highly collectible. “The Telephone Exchange,” painted for the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on April 7, 1962, shows two young ladies chatting while a surprised telephone operator listens intently to learn the local...

Illustration for the book Toby Tyler or Ten Weeks with a Circus
By Everett Shinn
Located in Fort Washington, PA
This illustration was used in Toby Tyler or Ten Weeks with a Circus by James Otis. Published in 1937 by The John C. Winston Company - "The Children's Bookshelf" series. The book features wonderful color plates and black & white illustrations by Everett Shinn. The full caption reads: "Toby tried very hard to go to sleep." Toby Tyler tells the story of a ten-year-old orphan who runs away from a foster home to join the traveling circus only to discover his new employer is a cruel taskmaster. Toby's friend, Mr. Stubbs the chimpanzee, reinforces the consequences of what happens when one follows one's natural instincts rather than one's intellect and conscience, a central theme of the novel. Date: 1937 Medium: Watercolor on Paper Dimensions: 18.00" x 12.50" Signature: Signed Lower Right Toby Tyler Book Illustration Exhibitions: Norman Rockwell Museum...
