The Dealer
original signed color lithograph from the Gambler Series
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'The Dealer' is an original lithograph from John Doyle's 'Gambler' series. The suite included ten different prints, each image capturing the exhilaration and danger of the games of chance played by casino goers. In one of the prints, a woman pulls the lever of a slot machine; in another, men queue before a lottery ticket window. In 'The Dealer,' a man faces the viewer directly. His stern gaze is hidden behind dark glasses as he springs cards between his hands in a flurry of aces and spades. His clothes reflect both the fashion of the 1970s while also hearkening to the villains of Western films. All the while, he is framed from behind by the arch of a blackjack table, which is itself lined by glistening lights of the casino.

Ring of Hope
original signed Shona stone sculpture by Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira
By Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Ring of Hope' is an original Shona stone sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. This sculpture is an excellent example of his abstract works. Out of the stone emerge organic, curving figures – at once suggesting lips while also suggesting the form of a calla lily. These forms are balanced atop two leg-like stems. These floral themes are well reflected by the green hue color of the opal serpentine stone, a soft stone filled with color and texture when polished.

Ready for Marriage
original stone Shona sculpture signed by Washington Msonza
By Washington Msonza
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Ready for Marriage' is an original opal serpentine sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Washington Msonza. The sculpture features a single elegant figure in a flowing gown, standing tall and averting her gaze as she clutches the veil that envelops her. Msonza emphasizes the materiality of the work, as is so desired of artists trained in the Shona tradition, by differentiating between the dark, smooth polish of her skin and the lighter textured surface of her clothes. Even more, passages of the surface are left in the serpentine's rough natural state, allowing the green-colored stone to contrast with the red-orange oxidization of its environment.
opal stone (serpentine)
33 x 12 x 12 inches
signed "Msonza W" on reverse along base
Overall good condition; some minor scratches, likely as the sculpture left artist's studio.
Base in photographs is not attached and is included at request of buyer.
Washington Msonza was born in 1966 in Domboshava where he attended primary school. He then moved to Chitungwiza to attend secondary schooling. While in school, he spent most of his time watching his sculptor brother-in-law Albert Mamvura, whose workshop was close to his house. In 1988 Msonza began assisting Albert full time, while simultaneously gaining experience by watching other well known artists in the area including Gedion Nyanhongo...

Mother and Child
original stone Shona sculpture by Obert Mukumbi sitting
By Obert Mukumbi
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Mother and Child' is an original stone sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Obert Mukumbi. This sculpture is unlike most other examples of Shona sculpture in that it has been carved to sit on a step, ledge or shelf rather than to stand upright. While this difference offers the chance for a more interactive artwork that can be set in unexpected locations, the aesthetics sensibilities that Obert applies to the subject are steeped in the Shona tradition. The materiality of the stone is on full display, with the artist playing with textures of rough-hewn stone and smooth polish. In addition, the mother and child show an intimate relationship, a common and desired theme amongst Shona artists.

Hunters
original acrylic painting signed by Stella Atal
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present painting is a bold an vibrant work by the artist and fashion designer Stella Atal. The image contains five abstract, cleanly-drawn figures against bright fields of green and yellow. The figures, representing hunters, are the very same that can be seen on her couture designs, referencing the history of African art, design and fashion.
54.75 x 36.5 inches, artwork
60.63 x 42.5 inches, frame
Signed 'Atal S' lower right
Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including UV5 Plexiglas to inhibit fading; housed in a wood modern profile gold moulding.
Stella Atal (Ugandan, active Paris, b. 1983) is a painter and fashion designer, and is the founder, owner and chief executive of Atal Stella Fashion House, with locations in Paris, France. She was born in the Northern Region of Uganda, along the northern shores of Lake Kyoga. Stella started her schooling in Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. She relocated to Kenya and continued her education there. Later, she completed her education in the United Kingdom. She has a bachelors and a master's degree in Fine Art.
She comfortably paints both miniature and large wall hangings using acrylics and water- based textile paints, she uses materials such as bark cloth, recycled paper made out of water hyacinth, Hessian, canvas and many other tradition materials. Her unique art pieces are inspired by ancient and contemporary African designs. They depict typical village scenes of life around Lake Victoria.
'Painting is the only way I can get back to my roots by using our cultural materials such as bark cloth that was used by our ancestors and helps me preserve my culture through some of the motifs I use that were used long ago as signs of belief and worship in the African culture.'
Her distinctive artwork is well known in Uganda and throughout East Africa. Her bold, fluid lines explore complex subjects such as women empowerment and national development with economy and grace. Her central artistic preoccupation is the continuation of distinctively African culture.
In 2007, she started her own label, Atal Stella. There she focuses on using what is locally available, including eco-friendly, natural and re-cycled material. Her designs have showcased at the Africa Fashion Week New York, in 2010 and at the Green Fashion...

Caring Mother
original springstone Shona sculpture by Brighton Mutongwizo
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Caring Mother' is an original springstone sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Brighton Mutongwizo. The sculpture presents a moment of motherly devotion, with a woman's tall figure embracing her child. Their faces are calm and content, with downcast eyes and full lips. In capturing these figures, Mutongwizo plays with the texture and finish of the stone, using a fine polish to emphasize the softness of skin alongside natural and rough textures to describe the texture and movement of hair.
