A lovely landscape oil painting on a wooden board. This is a small but highly detailed piece. It is most certainly in the category of "photos do not do this work justice". The rolling hills lead you into the rainy clouds and it tricks the brain into thinking you can smell the wet fields. It is most wonderful to see this work in person. It brings the sense of falling through a portal or peeking through one into a different part of the world.

DOUGLAS B. SMITH Doug received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1958. He then studied for a year in the Joseph Albers program at Yale University. After working for nine years in advertising and package design, Doug joined Avon Products and served as Creative Director of Design from 1971-1996. Doug's training as a professional illustrator led him to produce realistic renditions of many everyday scenes whether they arepure landscapes, architectural elements or figures. His painting evolved into natural and plein air landscapes suitable for the New England environment where he painted for over two decades. Doug's work is housed in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States and has been exhibited at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, and the Society of Illustrators in New York City. His paintings have been exhibited across the USA in Annual National Juried Exhibitions of the Oil Painters of America. Marie Laurencin (October 31, 1883 - June 8, 1956) was a French painter and printmaker. Laurencin was born in Paris, where she was raised by her mother and lived much of her life. At 18, she studied porcelain painting in Sèvres. She then returned to Paris and continued her art education at the Académie Humbert, where she changed her focus to oil painting.
During the early years of the 20th century, Laurencin was an important figure in the Parisian avant-garde. A member of both the circle of Pablo Picasso, and Cubists associated with the Section d'Or, such as Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes, Robert Delaunay, Henri le Fauconnier and Francis Picabia, exhibiting with them at the Salon des Indépendants (1910-1911) and the Salon d'Automne (1911-1912).
Laurencin's works include paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints. She is known as one of the few female Cubist painters, with Sonia Delaunay, Marie Vorobieff, and Franciska Clausen...

In the mid-nineteenth century, the United States government set out to survey and document its newly acquired lands and territories west of the Mississippi. The goals of these surveys were manifold: to produce topographical maps, to document flora and fauna, and to document natural resources to build the emerging US economy. These surveys, and the images from them, also functioned to build the new sense of American identity with the landscape, condensing vistas into the 'picturesque' tradition of European image making. Thus, the entire span of US territory could be seen as a single, cohesive whole.
This lithograph comes from one of six surveys commissioned by the Army's Topographic Bureau in 1853, which sought to find the best route to construct a transcontinental railroad. The result was a thirteen-volume report including maps, lithographs, and technical data entitled 'Explorations and Surveys to ascertain the most practicable and economical route for a Railroad from the Mississippi river to the Pacific Ocean.'
When it came to depicting the Columbia River, as seen in the present print, Stanley chose to depict the river's characteristic rock formations and choppy waters. The figures in the image give the viewer a sense of the vase scale of the imposing landscape. Other explorers that reached the site years before the Pacific Railroad Survey, such as Lewis and Clark, observed this scene with wonder and awe – and it is clear Stanley felt the same way.

'Cobalt Bird' is an original signed sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. Trained in the Shona carving tradition, Mazhindu often sculpts abstracted birds, as in this example. This sculpture is playfully interactive: Even though the bird has one body, there is a head carved on each side, asking the viewer to walk around to see it peeking back at them. At the same time as he is considering the viewer's interaction with the artwork, the sculptor is likewise displaying his skills as a sculptor. Cobalt stone is notoriously brittle, as well as rare, making it difficult to work with and to acquire. The efforts are however rewarding, as the polished stone reveals dramatic patterns of greens and blacks.
