In the mid-nineteenth century, the United States government set out to survey and document its newly acquired lands and territories west of the Mississippi. The goals of these surveys were manifold: to produce topographical maps, to document flora and fauna, and to document natural resources to build the emerging US economy. These surveys, and the images from them, also functioned to build the new sense of American identity with the landscape, condensing vistas into the 'picturesque' tradition of European image making. Thus, the entire span of US territory could be seen as a single, cohesive whole.
This lithograph comes from one of six surveys commissioned by the Army's Topographic Bureau in 1853, which sought to find the best route to construct a transcontinental railroad. The result was a thirteen-volume report including maps, lithographs, and technical data entitled 'Explorations and Surveys to ascertain the most practicable and economical route for a Railroad from the Mississippi river to the Pacific Ocean.' In particular, the print comes from the northern survey, commanded by Isaac Stevens, which explored the regions between the 47th and 49th parallels.

I wanted to become a photographer at the age of 12, when my sister Grace gave me a Kodak Box Brownie camera for Christmas. (I still have that camera.) Since our family was quite poor, I built my first enlarger with an oatmeal box, while that same box camera was used as its lens.
In 1947, just after graduation from high school, I had the opportunity to travel to California by car and house trailer with my uncle, aunt and mother, and in the process to shoot my first pictures along Route 66. Then, after graduation from college, a stint in the army followed by photography school, I opened an advertising photography studio in 1954. For over four decades my staff and I earned numerous local, regional and national awards for our achievements in photography, including several "best of show" honors.
In 1958 I studied with renowned landscape photographer Ansel Adams at his Yosemite National Park workshop. In 1980, while still operating my advertising photography studio, I began a serious photographic study of the decaying artifacts along our country's former Mother Road, Route 66.
The former national highway route from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California was not a popular subject at the time, and so I filed away my transparencies, not knowing what I might ever do with them. However, as time passed Route 66 did become a topic of national interest, and upon my retirement in 1997, I once again returned to record the Mother Road's artifacts.
A number of my Yosemite series photographs are included in the Ansel and Virginia Adams collection at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona at Tucson, and several of my Route 66 photographs and other subjects have been acquired by the Milwaukee Art Museum. At this time I am preparing a book of my photographic experiences along Route 66, from 1947 to the present. --Tom Ferderbar

Valerie J. Christell lives, works and maintains a studio in the Milwaukee area. She’s taught a variety of classes at Alverno over the years and is the former gallery director. Currently she’s teaching Figure Drawing classes and is a member of Alverno’s Art and Environment Committee.
After receiving her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign, Christell received her Master’s of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin/Milwaukee. Jeanne Marie Spicuzza is a poet, actress, model, filmmaker, philosopher, activist, producer, writer of children's stories, novels, essays, plays and screenplays, watercolor painter and illustrator, composer, lecturer and Master Herbalist. She appears on television, radio and film, as well as at festivals and venues such as Ladyfest, Lollapalooza, Bristol International Poetry Festival, Nuyorican Poets' Café, Green Mill, Pabst Theatre and others. Her films have screened at Portobello Film Festival London, Raleigh Studios, Wisconsin Film Festival and Women in the Directors' Chair. Jeanne Marie is listed in several Who's Who publications, including Who's Who of Emerging Leaders, and has received awards and nominations from Shepherd Express, Fade-In Magazine, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Vatican Division of Arts and Culture and others. She was nominated 'Woman of the Year' in 1998 through the National Organization for Women and was selected for inclusion on Wall of Tolerance at The Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama. Segments from her screenplay "Breath of God" are on permanent exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. She lectures around the world.
Jeanne Marie is published in Poets Against War, Quill and Parchment, Shepherd Express, Riverwest Review, Poetry Motel and others. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in philosophy and psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her collection of poetry, beautiful terrible & true, in its second printing, and poetry travelogue, My Italia, are available through Libri Publishers.
