Henri Matisse, The Swimming Pool II, from Verve, Revue Artistique, 1958 (after)
By Henri Matisse
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph after Henri Matisse (1869–1954), titled La Piscine II (The Swimming Pool II), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. IX, No. 35–36, originates from the 1958 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1958. La Piscine II is one of the most expansive and lyrical compositions from Matisse’s late cut-out period, inspired by his deep fascination with the movement of water, light, and the human form. The work’s sweeping arrangement of floating blue shapes and rhythmic negative space evokes swimmers and sea life in motion, transforming a simple visual theme into a poetic meditation on fluidity, serenity, and the joy of life. Through its monumental simplicity and chromatic brilliance, La Piscine II exemplifies Matisse’s mastery of “painting with scissors” and his ability to translate motion into pure visual harmony. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 40.5 inches, with trifold as issued. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, faithfully capturing the luminosity, rhythm, and tactile beauty of Matisse’s original gouache cut-outs. Artwork Details: Artist: After Henri Matisse (1869–1954) Title: La Piscine II (The Swimming Pool II), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. IX, No. 35–36, 1958 Medium: Lithograph on velin du Marais paper Dimensions: 14 x 40.5 inches, with trifold as issued Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1958 Publisher: Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Catalogue raisonne reference: Duthuit, Claude. Henri Matisse: Catalogue raisonne des ouvrages illustres. Editions Claude Duthuit, Paris, 1988, illustration 139 Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. IX, No. 35–36, published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, 1958 Notes: Excerpted from the publication, Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. IX, No. 35–36, published under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1958. This double issue of Verve was entirely devoted to the final works of Henri Matisse, composed of his celebrated gouache cut-outs, which the artist called “painting with scissors.” Completed shortly before his death, this issue represents the culmination of Matisse’s lifelong exploration of color, rhythm, and spiritual joy through the simplest means of expression. About the Publication: Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire was one of the most influential art periodicals of the 20th century, founded in Paris in 1937 by the visionary Greek-born publisher Teriade (Stratis Eleftheriades). Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was a work of art in itself, luxuriously printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and produced in collaboration with leading typographers and designers. Verve became a platform for avant-garde creativity, publishing original lithographs and essays that reflected the evolving spirit of modernism. Matisse collaborated closely with Teriade from the magazine’s inception, producing some of its most iconic issues, including those devoted to his paper cut-outs. The final Verve issue of 1958, which featured La Tristesse du Roi, the Nu Bleu series, Poisson Chinois, and Vigne, stands as a testament to Matisse’s enduring genius and to the publication’s legacy as the definitive meeting of art, poetry, and printing craftsmanship in 20th-century France. About the Artist: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French painter, sculptor, draughtsman, and printmaker whose revolutionary vision redefined modern art through his daring use of color, line, and form. Celebrated as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Matisse led the Fauvist movement and devoted his life to the pursuit of balance, beauty, and emotional expression in visual art. His early works burst with vibrant hues and liberated brushwork, while his later “cut-out” compositions achieved a poetic simplicity that transformed the relationship between color and space. Deeply influenced by the work of Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat, as well as by the rhythmic patterns of Islamic art, Byzantine mosaics, and Japanese prints, Matisse forged a new visual language that celebrated joy, movement, and serenity. He was part of an extraordinary generation of artists who shaped the evolution of modernism, maintaining lifelong dialogue and friendly rivalry with contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Andre Derain, Albert Marquet, and Raoul Dufy—peers who, like him, sought to expand the expressive potential of color and composition. Matisse’s influence extended across generations, inspiring modern and contemporary masters including Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, each of whom drew upon his fearless experimentation and refined visual harmony. His paintings, sculptures, and works on paper are held in the most prestigious museums in the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and the Hermitage Museum, where his art continues to symbolize the essence of creativity and human emotion. The highest price ever paid for a Henri Matisse artwork is approximately $80.8 million USD, achieved in 2018 at Christie’s New York for Odalisque couchee aux magnolias (1923). Marc Chagall, Romeo and Juliet, The Ceiling of the Paris Opera, 1965 (after)
By Marc Chagall
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph after Marc Chagall (1887–1985), titled Romeo et Juliette (Romeo and Juliet), from the album Le plafond de l’Opera de Paris par Marc Chagall (The Ceiling of the Paris Opera by Marc Chagall), originates from the 1965 edition published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte Carlo, rendered by Charles Sorlier, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, October 6, 1965. This romantic and luminous composition pays homage to Charles Gounod’s opera Romeo et Juliette, one of the works celebrated in Chagall’s magnificent ceiling design for the Palais Garnier. Romeo et Juliette radiates with the tenderness, tragedy, and transcendent beauty of Shakespeare’s tale, reimagined through Chagall’s poetic symbolism and vivid color. Floating lovers, celestial forms, and musical motifs intertwine in a lyrical vision of eternal love and harmony, reflecting the artist’s lifelong fascination with the union of art, music, and emotion. The composition captures the very spirit of Gounod’s music—lyrical, passionate, and filled with grace. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 13 x 9.5 inches (33.02 x 24.13 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the technical mastery of the Mourlot Freres atelier and the enduring collaboration between Marc Chagall and Charles Sorlier. Artwork Details: Artist: After Marc Chagall (1887–1985) Title: Romeo et Juliette (Romeo and Juliet), from Le plafond de l’Opera de Paris par Marc Chagall (The Ceiling of the Paris Opera by Marc Chagall) Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 13 x 9.5 inches (33.02 x 24.13 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1965 Publisher: Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte Carlo Rendered by: Charles Sorlier, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Catalogue raisonne references: Cain, Julien, and Fernand Mourlot. Chagall Lithographe III, 1962–1968. Andre Sauret, Editeur, 1969, illustration 434. Cramer, Patrick, and Meret Meyer. Marc Chagall: Catalogue Raisonne Des Livres Illustres. P. Cramer ed., 1995, illustration 61. Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album Le plafond de l’Opera de Paris par Marc Chagall (The Ceiling of the Paris Opera by Marc Chagall), published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte Carlo, October 6, 1965, in an edition of V̅ Notes: Excerpted from the album, This work could not have been made without the valuable collaboration of Madame Marc Chagall to whom we extend our warmest thanks. This work, made by Andre Sauret, was completed to print on October 6, 1965 on the presses of l’imprimerie du Lion in Paris. Jacques Lassaigne’s texts were composed by hand in Romain du Roi in the workshops of l’imprimerie nationale. The VI color lithographies and all the black and white drawings were set on stone by Charles Sorlier, based on Marc Chagall’s original models. The original lithography and color lithographs were drawn on the presses of Mourlot Freres. The binding is by Maurice Busenhart in Lausanne. About the Publication: Le plafond de l’Opera de Paris par Marc Chagall (The Ceiling of the Paris Opera by Marc Chagall), published in October 1965 by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte Carlo, commemorates one of the most ambitious and celebrated artistic commissions of the 20th century. Created under the direction of Charles Sorlier, the album documents Chagall’s magnificent ceiling design for the Palais Garnier in Paris, unveiled in 1964. The publication includes color lithographs based on the artist’s preparatory studies and painted maquettes, executed with exceptional fidelity by Mourlot Freres. Chagall’s ceiling—divided into segments representing musical masters such as Mozart, Wagner, Berlioz, Ravel, and Debussy—blends myth, music, and emotion into a vibrant celestial composition. The album captures this visionary synthesis through luminous lithography, allowing viewers to experience the grandeur and intimacy of the artist’s monumental work. Produced with the collaboration of Madame Marc Chagall, Charles Sorlier, and Fernand Mourlot, and printed with the precision and artistry for which Andre Sauret’s editions were renowned, this publication stands as both a tribute to Chagall’s genius and a celebration of French art’s enduring dialogue between tradition, innovation, and the divine. About the Artist: Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Belarus-born French painter, printmaker, and designer whose visionary imagination, radiant color, and deeply poetic symbolism made him one of the most beloved and influential artists of the 20th century. Rooted in the imagery of his Jewish heritage and the memories of his childhood in Vitebsk, Chagall’s art wove together themes of faith, love, folklore, and fantasy with a dreamlike modern sensibility. His unique style—merging elements of Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism, and Surrealism—defied categorization, transforming ordinary scenes into lyrical meditations on memory and emotion. Influenced by Russian icon painting, medieval religious art, and the modern innovations of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque, Chagall developed a profoundly personal visual language filled with floating figures, vibrant animals, musicians, and lovers that symbolized the transcendent power of imagination and love. During his early years in Paris, he became an integral part of the Ecole de Paris circle, forming friendships with Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Leger, and Sonia Delaunay, and his creative spirit resonated with that of his peers and successors—Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like Chagall, sought to push the boundaries of perception, emotion, and form. Over a prolific career that spanned painting, printmaking, stained glass, ceramics, and stage design, Chagall brought an unparalleled poetic sensibility to modern art, infusing even the most abstract subjects with human warmth and spiritual depth. His works are held in the most prestigious museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and the Guggenheim, where they continue to inspire generations of artists and collectors. The highest price ever paid for a Marc Chagall artwork is approximately $28.5 million USD, achieved in 2017 at Sotheby’s New York for Les Amoureux (1928). Marc Chagall Romeo...

About the Publication: Les Lithographies de Renoir (The Lithographs of Renoir), published in Monte-Carlo in 1951 under the direction of Andre Sauret in collaboration with Fernand Mourlot, stands among the most elegant postwar tributes to Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s artistic legacy. Conceived as part of the distinguished series of fine art albums issued by Editions du livre, the publication united leading masters of lithography to honor Renoir’s enduring influence on modern art. Printed on grand velin Renage filigrane a la marque de l'editeur by the ateliers of Mourlot Freres and Georges Duval, the album combined technical precision with scholarly presentation, showcasing interpretive plates rendered with exceptional fidelity and tonal refinement. It embodies the collaborative spirit between printer, publisher, and artist that characterized the golden age of French art editions, joining other monumental projects such as those devoted to Matisse, Chagall, Braque, and Picasso. A hallmark of twentieth-century art publishing, Les Lithographies de Renoir preserves the warmth and radiance of Renoir’s aesthetic through the masterful lithographic techniques that made Mourlot Freres synonymous with excellence in fine art printing. About the Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) was one of the most influential and beloved artists in the history of modern art, a French Impressionist master whose radiant color harmonies, sensual brushwork, and joyful depictions of life helped transform the course of painting. Born in Limoges, France, into a modest family, Renoir began his career as a porcelain painter before studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and joining the avant-garde circle of Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Frederic Bazille. Together they pioneered plein-air painting, capturing fleeting light and atmosphere with revolutionary immediacy. Renoir’s early works, such as La Loge (1874) and Bal du moulin de la Galette (1876), embody the luminous vitality of Impressionism, while his later period, influenced by the classical mastery of Raphael, Ingres, and Rubens, brought greater structure and sensuality to his figures. His art evolved into a vision of timeless beauty expressed through color, form, and emotion, celebrating humanity and intimacy with unmatched tenderness. Even when afflicted by severe rheumatoid arthritis, Renoir continued to paint daily, his hands bound with cloth, and collaborated with sculptor Richard Guino to translate his soft, fluid touch into bronze. His influence radiated across generations—Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray all drew inspiration from his dedication to expressive color and emotional depth. His sensual palette profoundly impacted Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Raoul Dufy, and Andre Derain, while later artists such as Marc Chagall and Balthus inherited his lyrical humanism and poetic approach to beauty. Renoir’s art, often described as a hymn to joy, found universality in its warmth, intimacy, and reverence for life’s everyday grace. Today, his works hang in major museums worldwide, including the Musee d’Orsay, the Louvre, the National Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, continuing to inspire collectors and artists alike. The highest auction record for Pierre-Auguste Renoir was achieved with Bal du moulin de la Galette (1876), which sold for $78.1 million USD at Sotheby’s, New York, on May 17, 1990, securing his enduring legacy as one of the greatest masters of Impressionism and one of the most cherished figures in art history.
