Three Yellowlegs.

The drypoint created in 1920 is a working state, the fourth of eight. The eight states are listed in the Frank W. Benson catalogue raisonne by Adam Paff #184. There are two recorded impressions of this print making it a rare find. It is signed in pencil and inscribed "D-2." The Image size 4 3/8 x 5 13/16" (11.1 x 14.8 cm). The final printed edition of "Three Yellowlegs" was 150.
Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951), well known for his American impressionist paintings, produced an incredible body of prints - etchings, drypoints, and a few lithographs. Born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts, Benson, a natural outdoorsman, grew up sailing, fishing, and hunting. While a teenager his fascination with drawing and birding developed simultaneously and continued throughout his life.
His first art instruction was with Otto Grundman at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and then in 1883 in Paris at the Academie Julian where he studied the rigorous ‘ecole des beaux arts’ approach to drawing and painting for two years.

A fine impression, printed with subtle tone.
The bridge theme occurs repeatedly in Whistler’s vistas. It is also the main focus of more than one of the Venetian prints. While some bridges are seen from below, from where one would see it if approaching in a gondola (for example Ponte del Piovan, Kennedy 209), The Bridge depicts the scene from a high perspective, opening up the view into the far distance. The small boat approaching the arch in the foreground is again, as in the earlier Thames prints, a stock motif that is probably ultimately derived from the Japanese woodcuts of Hokusai and Hiroshige. The bridge here is the Ponte de le Terese over the Rio de l’Arzere in the Santa Marta quarter.
The early biography of Whistler by Elizabeth and Joseph Pennell is essential for its “immense quantity of information” but also notorious for “the inherent hyperbole and misinformation” (Eric Denker, Annotated Bibliography, in Fine, p. 184). Still, it is worth quoting from the Pennels’ appraisal of The Bridge: “Simplicity of expression has never been carried further. Edmund Blampied was a painter, etcher, lithographer and sculptor. Born in 1886 to a family of three boys in St. Martin, Jersey, Blampied became interested in drawing at an early age. After visiting the studio of John Helier Lander in 1899, Blampied decided to make a career as an artist. In 1903 he went to London to attend Lambeth Art School, where he studied etching under Walter Seymour.
In 1905, he joined the Daily Chronicle as an artist. In that year he was awarded a scholarship to Bolt Court Scool of Photo-engraving and Lithography.
In 1912 he left the Chronicle and established his own studio. He earned a living by illustrating novels and short stories.
In 1913, he had his first exhibition at the Leicester Gallery in London. The following year he married Marianne Van Abbé.
During the 1920's, he became a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. During the 1920s Blampied became a member of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers and exhibited in London to critical acclaim. He produced a folio of comic drawings in the 1930s which was published in New York in 1934 and another that was published in London in 1936. The Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum published a mongraph on his work. His London exhibitions were highly successful.

The Pigeon is an aquatint and drypoint print on chine from one of the deluxe copies of Picasso's 1942 Histoire Naturelle - Textes de Buffon series. The image size is 10.75x 8 inches, unsigned as issued, and framed in a contemporary silver and gray moulding. One of about 36 prints that exist with Picasso's remarqued title in French, from the edition of 262 (there were 226 portfolios, some with additional sets on varying papers).

The exceptional etchings from Picasso’s Histoire Naturelle – Textes de Buffon are a masterful combination of sugar-lift aquatint and drypoint, showcasing a full range of gray tonalities. The etchings of animals, birds and insects are considered some of the most beautiful and most unusual examples of Picasso’s graphic work.
Roger Lacourière, Picasso’s master printer, pulled the prints for each etching between 1939-1942. It was Lacourière who taught Picasso the sugar-lift aquatint technique which allowed him to mimic the effect of brushstrokes in these etched images. Picasso first explored the technique in his plates for the Vollard Suite, but it was in the creation of the Buffon images that he fully realized its stunning, painterly potential.
For the edition, 226 portfolios were produced with the first thirty-six counting as deluxe compilations. These rare deluxe sets were on diverse papers (chine, japon or vergé ancien) and each included a complete additional suite showing Picasso’s title remarques along the bottom. As such, the remarqued versions of the prints are quite rare with just thirty-six of each produced for the edition (with the exception of The Wolf which is never remarqued – the image always fills the entire etching plate).
These prints are based on the writings of French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, who extensively documented the natural world in his monumental work Histoire Naturelle. Picasso’s association with the project to illustrate parts of the Buffon came during a tumultuous time in European history – the prelude to, and early years of, World War II. As the continent was ravaged, Picasso lived through the disaster in Paris, which the Germans occupied in 1940. Similar to engraving, with drypoint, an artist incises a metal plate with a sharp tool. As the metal is carved, metal shavings, also called the burr, build up in the grooves. But unlike with engraving, the burr is not cleaned away with drypoint, resulting in very soft, velvety lines. Since the burr slowly wears away with each printing, fewer impressions can be made, and the first impression tends to be stronger than the last — a characteristic that sets the technique apart from many other printing methods.
Drypoint is a simple technique used to produce intaglio prints. Intaglio is a broad term for the variety of methods used to create images by incising a metal plate, either with a sharp instrument (engraving, drypoint and mezzotint) or with acid (etching, aquatint and photogravure).
“If you talk to great artists, they see printmaking as another part of their practice that often informs what they do,” says Sharon Coplan Hurowitz, a print specialist and art adviser who has worked on major print projects over the years with Johns and Ellsworth Kelly and authored the catalogue raisonné of John Baldessari’s prints.
