Important 19th Century Charles Cressant Influenced Commode
By Maison Millet
Located in Brighton, Sussex
An important French mid-19th century gilt-bronze mounted kingwood, satiné and parquetry bombé commode after the model by Charles Cressent attributed to Maison Millet, Paris the serpentine Brocatelle Violette d'Espagne marble top above two long drawers centred by a flaming urn, flanked to each side by a child holding oak branches and headed by courting doves, the front angles with a bust of a boy and a girl each holding a dove, each bombé side with intertwined oak branches, on oak tree trunk supports and foliate-cast feet. The original model for the present commode dates from the 1730s and is the work of Charles Cressent (maître in 1720; d. 1768). Entering the collection of the Dukes of Hamilton after the French revolution, the commode was sold at the celebrated Hamilton Palace sale (lot 1806) in 1882. It was purchased by Ferdinand Rothschild and is now in the collection at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. This impressive Régence style commode is reminiscent of the work of François Linke, however none of the mounts appear to be stamped or recorded in his oeuvre. Maison Millet was an active client of François Linke and it is believed that this commode with its distinctive high quality mounts and construction are characteristic of the production of this celebrated Parisian cabinet maker. Maison Millet was established by Théodore Millet in 1853, and continued until 1902 from premises at 11, Rue Jacques-Coeur, Paris before relocating to 23, Boulevard Beaumarchais. Maison Millet was a highly regarded furniture company that was described as producing 'meuble et bronze d'art, genre ancien et moderne'. The firm won several awards in the series of exhibitions in London and Paris, such as the gold Medal in the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle. In 1902 Maison Millet was authorised by the director of the Palais de Versailles to replicate Marie-Antoinette's celebrated Grand Cabinet à bijoux. Literature: Sir Anthony Blunt...

The 10.5ft 18th Century George I Bur/Burl Walnut Month Longcase Clock by
By James Markwick
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
This is, without doubt, the largest and most impressive English longcase/grandfather clock we have ever encountered, standing at three meters twenty (10.5ft/321cm) and it is quite possibly the largest from the entire 18th century. The golden age. As you might expect, no expense was spared when this clock was commissioned circa 1710-1720, using only the very finest cuts of burr/burl walnut to adorn the case and cross-grain mouldings throughout, leading up to the sensational month going, quarter chiming movement by James Markwick, London. Once wound, the clock will run for one month, chiming the quarters on six bells...

Louis XV Rococo Style Clock and Barometer Set by P. Gravelin
By L. Marti et Cie
Located in London, GB
Louis XV Rococo style clock and barometer set by Gravelin French, Late 19th Century Clock & Barometer: height 77cm, width 32cm, depth 15cm Designed in the Louis XV Rococo style, this very fine clock and barometer set dates to c.1870 and was made by Parisian makers Paul Gravelin & Louis Marti et Cie in the time of the French Belle Époque. The matching cases are cast with scrolling foliate decoration, with intricate, elegant swirling flowers and ribbons, in rocaille form. The dial of the clock is painted with both Arabic and Roman numerals and signed to the centre 'Paul Gravelin,' above the dial, and below: 'Paris, 8 Rue Charlot,' while the square-plate eight-day movement is by Marti, an stamped 'Louis Marti et Cie, Bronze Medaille.' The gilding is of exceptional quality, and demonstrates the prowess of late nineteenth century Parisian craftsmen, who looked to earlier French regal periods for stylistic inspiration yet updated styles, particularly the Rococo, with their own individual flair, as is evident from these fine antique timepieces.

Palatial Early 20th Century Gilt Bronze Mounted Vitrine by François Linke
By François Linke
Located in Long Island City, NY
A palatial and superb early 20th century gilt bronze Mounted Louis XVI style Mahogany Vitrine by François Linke François Linke The arched top with scrolled corners and centered by a laurel wreath and crossed acanthus branches, above a central large door at top by a lyre on drapery-covered plinth, flanked by scrolling acanthus, with a smaller door to each side hung with floral swags and with central oval plate, the divides cast with a slender flower-filled vase, the interior with adjustable shelves and drawers to the bottom, on shaped foliate-cast plinth and acanthus-capped tapering feet. Inscribed F. Linke to the top right bronze mount and stamped “C LINKE” on the back of the locks. Linke was born in Pankraz in Bohemia and was celebrated by the French as one of the greatest ébénistes of meubles de style at the turn of the century. He began his apprenticeship with a Bohemian master at the age of thirteen. Four years later, he toured Austria, settling and working in Vienna for two years. Linke arrived in Paris in 1875, and by 1881 he had established his own small workshop at 170 rue du Faubourg St. Antoine. Taking 18th century styles as his starting point and adapting earlier styles to contemporary taste, Linke produced fine quality furniture, steadily expanding his business during the next 20 years. He firmly established his reputation after receiving a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 for his extraordinary Grand Bureau. He continued to use international fairs as a means of exploring new markets, exhibiting at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, the Liege in Belgium and the 1908 Franco-British exhibition in London. Linke’s highly original designs sprang from the Régence and Rococo styles but were imbued with something quite new – Rococo curves were laden with gilt-bronze sculptural mounts in the tradition of A.-C. Boulle (1642-1732) or Charles Cressent (1685-1758). Stylistically, the new designs still adhered to the Rococo; the novelty, however, was Linke’s fusion of the Rococo with the liveliness and the fluidity of the ‘art nouveau’. The Revue called Linke’s creations entierement nouveau, and continued to say that ‘Linke’s stand...

Fabbriche di Careggine - Mid 19th Century Oil Painting of Tuscany Hills Italy
By Edmund John Niemann
Located in Gerrards Cross, GB
‘Fabbriche di Careggine’ by Edmund John Niemann (1813-1876). Fabbriche di Careggine is the name of a Italian ghost village that today lies beneath Vagli di Sotto, a man-made lake in Tuscany. Prior to its flooding in 1953 the village was home to a community of subsistence farmers who raised sheep and Garfagnana goats. Academy Fine Paintings is fully conversant with the legal exemptions which, under the supreme law of the U.S. Constitution, enable us to ship paintings to America free of reciprocal trade tariffs. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is always complimentary. Academy Fine Paintings only offers artwork for sale in the finest condition it can be for its age having been professionally cleaned, conserved, and re-varnished. It is not uncommon for paintings by one member of famous family of artists to be mistakenly attributed to a relative; a picture by “the Elder” is erroneously credited as being by “the Younger” and the work of one brother is confused with another, and so on. In 19th century British art...

Located in London, GB
Austrian Orientalist cold-painted bronze lamp of a shoe cobbler Austrian, Early 20th Century Height 23cm, width 21cm, depth 16cm The story presented by the makers of this sculptural lamp is set at a shoe cobbler’s workshop. Made in the traditional Viennese manner of cold-painted bronze, the piece is an outstanding example of high quality Orientalist design. Three shoe cobblers are depicted working together in a traditional Orientalist building, one covered by textiles to protect them from the elements. The wall is decorated with a large pair of scissors, a tool often used by shoe cobblers. In the foreground is a male figure reaching towards a wooden bench on which shoes needing repair are displayed. Behind him, sitting on a bamboo-supported table sit two other male figures. The first one is caught mid-speaking, in a pose suggesting he is excited. On his legs is a piece of textile. The man next to him is seen holding threads in both hands, repairing a vibrant red shoe.
