Teddy Millington-Drake (1932-1994) was a nomad, linguist, bon viveur, aesthete and master gardener, but above all an artist.
Discharged from service and in part inspired by his sister's anecdotes of her travels abroad, Millington-Drake embarked on a painting tour that took him to Lebanon, Iran, Iraq and Syria. He then rented a house, the Villa Albrizzi at Este, Veneto in Italy, and became a more frequent painter, particularly now of abstract murals. He befriended Freya Stark, a writer and traveler who lived nearby, and in Venice he became friends with Daisy Fellowes, Peggy Guggenheim, Barbara Hutton and Elsa Maxwell. In Este, he painted continually and more boldly, turning his hand to abstract murals.
He later transformed a neglected Tuscan farmhouse in the village of Poggio which was co-decorated by his friend the designer John Stefanidis. There were vine-hung terraces and a skillfully landscaped garden. A swimming-POOL was built on a shelf cut into the Hillside, so that you felt yourself gliding towards the horizon, suspended in space as you swam. There Millington-Drake worked passionately at all forms of painting. There are haunting large abstracts inspired by Jung, hard-edged acrylic wave paintings and some intriguing semi-calligraphic works on paper based on phrases taken from the works of poets such as Cavafy, Mandelstam and Elizabeth Bishop...

An exquisite interior scene depicting a mother hen as she roosts while her chicks peck about the room, four feeding on the grain in a simple white porcelain plate while several gather to drink from a pottery vessel filled with water. The interior suggests the location is perhaps the storeroom or root cellar with a shelf stacked with garlic and a covered vessel hanging on the wall over the hen. The work is signed in the lower left corner "A Cherubini 1867, Roma" and the reverse retains labels from the gallery of Schillay Fine Art, Inc. in New York and subsequently an inventory label for Faultless Starch Bonami Company. The work has been professionally conserved and remains in pristine condition. Born in Rome in 1833, Andrea Cherubini was primarily a landscape and seascape painter, preferring to capture views of Southern Italy. A typical example would include Drawing in the nets, Sorrento offered at Christies, London in January of 2013, ultimately achieving 4375 GBP. The Benezit notes a few of his scenes as particularly interesting, including Seascape (1883), Eight Views of Capri and Views of the Island of Ischia and Surroundings. Important Baroque painting attributable to the hand of the great Roman old master Giacinto Brandi. It depicts San Giovannino who, with an expression of rare beauty and intensity, turns his gaze toward us who observe this small masterpiece. Giacinto Brandi (1621 – 19 January 1691) was an Italian painter from the Baroque era, active mainly in Rome and Naples. Born in Rome,he was part of the studio of Alessandro Algardi, a noted sculptor who noted that Brandi was more suited to painting. He joined the studio of Giovanni Giacomo Sementi. He traveled to Naples from 1638, and by 1647 had returned to Rome to work under Giovanni Lanfranco, where Brandi befriended Mattia Preti. The two artists would later on, often collaborate. His works are well distributed among baroque Churches of Rome including San Carlo al Corso ceiling frescoes (1670–1671), San Silvestro in Capite, Sant'Andrea al Quirinale, a canvas of Sant'Andrea (1650) in Santa Maria in Via Lata a painting of Martyrdom of the Forty (1660) for the Chiesa delle Santissima Stimmate di San Francesco a Coronation of the Virgin (1680) which serves as main altarpiece for the church of Gesù e Maria, a canvas of the Drunkedness of Noah in the Galleria Corsini, an Assumption (1655) for Santa Maria in Organo in Verona a fresco from Ovid's Metamorphoses (1651–1653) for Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona, and a Martyrdom of San Biagio for the church of San Carlo ai Catinari a Visione del beato Giovanni di San Facondo (1656) and a Estasi della beata Rita da Cascia (1660) in the Basilica di Sant'Agostino in Campo Marzio San Rocco intercede per i malati di peste (1673) and San Rocco in gloria (1674) in the Chiesa di San Rocco all'Augusteo; Compianto sul Cristo morto (1675–76) in the Chiesa di Sant'Andrea al Quirinale.
