Large Contemporary Ceramic Tsubo Jar by Kai Tsujimura

A massive stoneware tsubo floor jar created by Japanese contemporary ceramic artist Kai Tsujimura (1976-). The heavy jar with its impressive volume was made in the tradition of Iga ware with local coarse sandy clay that turned reddish after the firing. It took its shape from heavy medieval storage jars with a wide-open mouth. For a nearly identical form, see an Echizen jar from Heian period (794–1185) in the collection of MET (Accession Number: 1977.261). The surface showcases scattered white crystalized feldspars and a green vitrified ash glaze cascade down the body (known as biidoro in Japanese - after the Portuguese word for glass vidoro). Made by Japanese ceramic artist Makoto Yabe (1947-2005), this stoneware vase features a globular body supported by a round pedestal foot. A similarly shaped neck extends to a rimmed mouth opening. Robust in form with thick wall, the vase is noted for its irregular cloved form. The surface is covered in a beige-yellow glaze, on top of which, dark brown strokes and thick white feldspar slip were artistically applied in a splashed and washed pattern. Together with some random shallow incision lines, they form an abstract painting with textured surface where some slip forms small droplets at the end of the stroke. The work was created in traditional Japanese manner and reflects the beauty of Wabi Sabi, a Zen aesthetic for the imperfect perfection.
The base was incised with the artist's cipher.
"Makoto Yabe's work beautifully exemplifies the transmission of Japanese ceramics to the West. Born in Fukushima, Japan, Yabe began studying ceramics in Kyoto at the age of nine. He completed his training at the age of 24, with a four-year apprenticeship under Jinmatsu Uno and Sango Uno. Yabe then came to Boston, where he was an integral member of the local ceramic community, yet he maintained his Japanese roots. As an instructor of ceramics, Yabe worked in the Boston area at numerous schools and universities, touching the lives of all his students and expanding their knowledge and appreciation of studio ceramics."

A large cache of porcelain and other merchandise was discovered on the wreck of a Dutch East India Company ship, the Geldermalsen, which sank in the South China Seas in 1752 and was discovered in 1985.
The ship had been bound for Amsterdam from Canton when it crashed into a reef and sank along with its cargo of tea, raw silk, porcelain and gold ingots. Some 235 years after it set out on its journey, the cargo was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher and sold at Christie's in Amsterdam in 1986.

A striking blue and white vase from the studio of Japanese Potter Makuzu Kozan, also known as Miyagawa Kozan (1842–1916), one of the most established and collected ceramist from Meiji Period. Born as Miyagawa Toranosuke, Kozan established his pottery studio in Yokohama circa 1870s and later became one of the appointed artists to the Japanese Imperial household. His work was exhibited in many international fairs that the Meiji government participated at the turn of the century and won many grand prizes.
Of a relatively large size, this vase is decorated with underglaze cobalt blue using the novel technique developed by Kozan called Fuki-e (the blow painting). As a result, the bamboos appear took on a three-dimensional quality as if appearing in a mist. Known as one of the most creative ceramists, circa 1887, Kozan started experimenting with new chemical colors from the West in the format of his porcelain glaze. New colors allowed him to create underglaze design that appeared bright, smooth and glossy. He even invented his own receipt of cobalt blue to achieve a much brighter yet softer shade, as evident on this vase. A fine Japanese ceramic satsuma plate made by Kinkozan and retailed by Yamanaka & Co. circa 1900-20s (late Meiji to early Tasho Period). The cream-color glazed plate features a very fine decoration of a maple tree in the midst of foliage color-changing in autumn. The poetic composition is stylized but also realistic, with a literati painter's quality, and was advantageously enhanced by the enamel colorings in incredible details. The maple tree is one of the favored motifs by the fine satsuma potters such as Yabu Meizan as it demonstrates the painter's skill. It is signed on the base in gilt kanji seal (Made by Kinkozan) and branded Yamanaka & Co in English. The plate was likely commissioned by the company from Kinkozan for its various galleries in US and Europe.

The pedestal dish was a typical ceramic output from Sawankhalok region, likely one of the kilns in Sri Sachanalai that thrived during 14th-15th century. Sukhothai ceramics made a large portion of export from Asia during that period due to the political policy in Ming Dynasty that banned the ocean faring (the so called Ming Gap). This stemmed dish, likely an export item, was modeled in a Classic Chinese form. The under-glaze deep blue decorations depicting the scrolling vines and flowers, as well as the archaic band around the base, are also reminiscent to the designs found in blue and white porcelain in Ming dynasty. The piece shows a fine crackles and age wear on the dish surface, an indication of appropriate patina. Large Japanese Satsuma Ceramic Vase Kinkozan

A large Japanese ceramic vase from the end of Meiji period circa 1890-1910s by Kinkozan (1645-1927). One of the largest studio manufacturers of the export ceramics at the time based in Kyoto. In the typical style of satsuma made at the turn of 20th century, the vase is elaborately decorated with a rather unusual kinran-de (gold paint) and green enamel highlight on a mottled brown background. The painterly decoration depicts a large seasonal floral arrangement in a circular fashion. Besides the obviously superb craftsmanship, what sets this particular vase apart from many lower quality and mass-produced pieces is its tone-on-tone color pallet that is visually somber and the small and sensitive details that heralds the change of the seasons. When the viewer goes beyond the first casual glimpse of the blossom and foliage, one would notice that on the edges of certain leaves as well as along the stalks, there accumulates a very thin layer of the white dust that represents the frost. The flower in bloom are chrysanthemums. Despite of being splendid, they are the messengers of the autumn. The large lotus leaf was subtly rendered in a bended and slightly withered manner, just past its prime. Although the lotus is still in bloom, the prominent seed pod indicates it may be the last for the season. The sentimental capture of the change of the seasons is not unusual in Japanese art. This vase poetically represents such a subtle transition from summer to fall, perhaps depicting the very first frost.

A fine Japanese ceramic satsuma plate made by Kinkozan and retailed by Yamanaka & Co. circa 1900-20s (late Meiji to early Tasho Period). The cream-color glazed plate features a very fine decoration of a persimmon tree bearing fruits. The composition is poetic, stylized but also realistic, with a literati painter's quality, and was advantageously enhanced by the enamel colorings in incredible details. The mastership of the medium came through the piece. It is signed on the base in gilt kanji seal (Made by Kinkozan) and branded Yamanaka & Co in English. The plate was likely commissioned by the company from Kinkozan for its various galleries in US and Europe.
